His name was Alejandro Cabrera Clemente. He was 49. He came from Mexico. On April 11, 2026, he was found unresponsive in his ICE detention cell at the Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana — a privately operated prison in one of the poorest parishes in one of the poorest states in the country. He was transported by ambulance to a local medical center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.

He is the 47th person to die in ICE detention during the second Trump administration. He is the 16th to die this year alone.

Researchers tracking these deaths have done the math and it's horrifying. From January 1 to April 11, 2026, that is 101 days and 16 deaths.

One person dead in ICE custody every 6.3 days. For comparison, 2025 was described as the deadliest year for ICE detention in more than two decades — and there were 32 deaths that entire year. We are four months into 2026, and we are already halfway to that total.

Winn Correctional Center is worth understanding. It is a private prison in rural Winn Parish, Louisiana — a facility holding approximately 1,577 people at any given time. It sits in a region journalists and researchers have started calling "detention alley," a stretch of Louisiana countryside studded with immigrant detention facilities far from major cities, far from immigration lawyers, and far from the families of the people locked inside. The San Francisco Chronicle has been investigating the full scope of deaths across ICE detention since January 2025 — 48 deaths and counting — and reporters have noted that ICE's official press releases rarely tell the full story of what happened to people in their final days.

ICE's statement on Cabrera's death follows its standard template: found unresponsive, transported to medical center, pronounced dead. No details about how long he had been detained, what medical conditions he had, whether he requested care, or whether care was provided. ICE routinely includes a list of prior convictions in these statements — a detail critics note has no bearing on whether someone receives adequate medical attention while in government custody but serves to preemptively justify the death in the public's eyes. Mexican diplomat Vanessa Calva Ruiz, responding to the pattern of Mexican nationals dying in ICE detention, called the trend "alarming and unacceptable" last month.

Alejandro Cabrera Clemente was not a headline before this. He was not famous. There will be no congressional hearing about his specific case, no presidential statement, no moment of silence on the floor of the House.

There will be another ICE press release in roughly six days when the 48th person dies, and it will follow the same template.
