Walking across the stage at the Swanson Amphitheater on Friday was extra special for M'Liss Shrum of Tenmile as she followed in the footsteps of her family.

"I've always wanted to be a nurse," Shrum said. "I was born into this school, my mom graduated and my grandmother also graduated from UCC Nursing as well. So I'm third generation."

Shrum capped her four years at Umpqua Community College by participating in the graduation ceremony on Friday on campus. She said she spent two years at the school to obtain credits and prerequisites, then spent the past two years obtaining the Associate Degree in Nursing. She plans to work at CHI Mercy Health for her residency and will start her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the fall online through Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, which should last three terms. She hopes to be become a nurse practitioner in psychology, because she wants to help with the severe mental health crisis in the area.

The affordability is one reason why Shrum pursued the degree at UCC and why she will encourage her daughter to do the same. Shrum said she graduated with minimal student loan accumulation comparative to others in her family who attended four-year schools. Additionally, the small campus size allows for teachers and students to know each other better, with Shrum commenting that it is not common in other places for the college president to know students by name.

"I would encourage people to come here, because classes are nice and small," Shrum said. "Well, I can't attest how many students might have been in an online program, but in person it was really small. You could get to know the professors, and then the affordability is totally what helps a lot, and also all the other community programs."

Umpqua Community College celebrated nearly 1,400 students graduating with various associate diplomas, certificates, general education development (GED) degrees and more. Keynote speaker and Chief Financial Officer at the Ford Family Foundation Aden Bliss encouraged the students with formulas for life, including that success equals luck plus skill times effort, and that happiness equals reality minus expectations.

Logan Anderson and Paxton Burke are standouts on the baseball diamond, but they stick out on this year’s Dr. Stewart’s American Legion Baseball roster for a different reason.

They’re the wily old veterans amongst a group of first-year Docs players and high school underclassmen.

“It’s definitely a wide group of guys, as far as, you have a few of the returners and some older guys on top and then it drops to a pretty young group, pretty quick. So, we’ll lean on those guys,” first year coach Cody Walton said ahead of Wednesday’s season-opening 10-2 loss against Medford at Champion Car Wash Field.

Anderson is back from his freshman season at Southwestern Oregon Community College and will play his fourth and final season with the Docs.

“It’s a great opportunity to come back,” Anderson said. “I had a lot of fun my first year. The older guys made it a lot of fun, so that’s kind of my goal this year is to make it fun for the younger guys and as well as compete and win some ballgames.”
