We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in Roselle with a beautiful celebration filled with culture, traditions, music, dance, poetry, art, and, above all, community.

Thank you to everyone who made this event possible for Roselle’s Hispanic community, in a diverse city that we are proud to call home.

A special recognition goes to those whose work, talent, and commitment help our community shine and who were celebrated with the applause and appreciation of everyone in attendance. We also thank the organizations, cultural groups, artists, and collaborators who continue to keep our roots and traditions alive.

And, of course, our sincere appreciation goes to the entire Roselle Library team for supporting initiatives that bring culture closer to our community. Art, music, dance, poetry, painting, and every form of artistic expression are part of the heart of our communities and serve as an invaluable example for the next generation.

To our entire team, thank you for making this possible. And a very special thank you to our photographers, Mathew and Jydan Chavez, for documenting this celebration and capturing so many meaningful moments.

Let us continue keeping our culture alive, celebrating our roots, and taking pride in our Hispanic Heritage here in Roselle.

Today we celebrate another beautiful community gathering in Roselle — a neighborhood block party hosted by our Councilwoman-at-Large Cynthia Johnson and a wonderful team of collaborators who continue to give their time, energy, and care to our community.

Events like these are about more than music, food, and activities. They create opportunities for neighbors to meet, families to spend time together, children to enjoy their community, and residents to strengthen the connections that make Roselle home.

Thank you to Councilwoman Johnson and everyone who helped organize, volunteer, and contribute to bringing our community together.

It takes people who care, participate, and are willing to give their time to create these moments.

Another day of community, connection, and Roselle pride.

See you at the next Roselle Insider!

The people of Roselle have spoken, and we have a result.

The referendum did not pass.
I respect the decision of our community, including those who saw this issue differently than I did.
Thank you to everyone who reached out during this process with your messages, questions, concerns, support, and even your criticism.
One of the most important things that comes from any democratic process is what we learn along the way.
I also want to acknowledge something important: I understand that the proposed investment was difficult for some families.
The economy is challenging, property taxes matter, and people have every right to question how public money is spent.
Those concerns deserve respect.

At the same time, the problems that led to this referendum do not disappear because the referendum failed.

The conversation about school space, facilities, the conditions in which our children learn, and the long-term needs of Roselle continues.
My personal belief remains that someday Roselle will have the school facilities our children and community need.
For those who supported the referendum, there is also something to learn from this result.
Information matters. Communication matters. Listening matters.
And understanding why our neighbors reached a different conclusion matters just as much as explaining why we reached ours.
There was a great deal of information made available throughout this process, but information only becomes useful when we take the time to read it, question it, analyze it, and discuss it with one another.

And I want to make one final reflection.
When we speak negatively about “Roselle schools,” we should remember that we are not simply talking about buildings.
We are talking about our children, our teachers, our families, our neighbors, and our community.
Schools certainly play an important role in a child's development, but education does not begin and end at the schoolhouse door. Families, homes, neighborhoods, expectations, values, opportunities, and community involvement all contribute to the people our children become.

We can demand better facilities. We can demand accountability. We can ask difficult questions about academics, spending, and results. Those conversations are not mutually exclusive.
The vote is over, but the underlying questions remain.

What kind of learning environment do we want for Roselle's children?
How do we address our facility needs in a way the community can support?
And, most importantly, what comes next?

Today, I respect the result.
Tomorrow, the work of understanding and addressing Roselle's needs continues.
I remain hopeful that one day we will find a path forward that our community can understand, afford, trust, and support.

Roselle deserves that conversation.
