This page will shut down in a few days. It's been neglected for some time, and I don't see that changing. I had hoped it would, but I have to admit that's unlikely.
Our responsibilities to my elderly father-in-law have a number of aspects, some of which should disappear in the next few months of year, but the main one will only increase.
We bought a small business early last year, and although most of the transaction work is now passed, we want to make changes that will be time eaters.
I have been approached to write a book, and I need to move that to the front burner.
So thank all of you who have followed this page, and best of luck in the future!

The internet loves heartwarming tales about Good Samaritans helping people in need. But they're also horrifying warning signs of a society unwilling to provide social support for the vulnerable. Meeting people's basic needs shouldn't depend on individuals' altruism.

Since June 26 is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage, I thought I'd post photos of some of the many same-sex marriages I have performed as a Humanist Celebrant.

As of June 23, the USPS is changing how it charges for shipping.
It will now use dimensional weight pricing in many more cases, which makes size more important than weight. Dimensional Weight is calculated for packages larger than 1 cubic foot by multiplying the L x W x H and then using the USPS divisor of 166.
That means you start by measuring the dimensions of your package. First example, 13" by 12" by 20" equals 2,880 cubic inches. If your package totals less than 1 cubic foot of 1,728 cubic inches, dimensional weight pricing won't apply.
But if it is larger than 1 cubic foot and the DiM weight is greater than the actual weight of the package, you will be required to use the DiM weight to calculate the shipping cost.
In short, if you have an item to ship out that's large but light, get it out before June 23. Down the road, use the smallest box possible, consider using USPS Flat-rate boxes and envelopes, or consider padded or regular envelopes for soft items.

Our route to Florida was slightly different this time because of our attendance at the Western Front Association symposium. Saturday night we stayed in Hopewell, Va. City Point is a part of Hopewell, so we made a stop there before we left. We have been there before, but that's a long time ago. And it was Father's Day morning.

At its height during the Civil War. 100,000 soldiers were stationed there, including Greg's great-great-grandfather. Lincoln spent 3 weeks there shortly before the war ended; I wonder if Joseph Macdonald saw him.

The large house was the HQ of the quarter master. General Grant lived in a simple cabin that was just slightly larger than the other officers' cabins, as his wife joined him there for part of the year. It comprises a bedroom and his office. I applaud her.

The view is a lovely one.and as usual, the Park Ranger really knew his stuff and was just great. I've never been less than impressed by our Park Rangers!
