Thirty years ago, I came to the United States in search of the American dream, that dream so many have pursued in this incredible land. A land that has seen the best and worst of humanity. From the original tribes who once roamed freely,
to the taking of land from the Mexican people in the south,
to the painful history of slavery and oppression of Black people! and now, the struggles of Hispanic and Latino communities whose dreams have too often turned into nightmares.
When will our children be able to dream, play, and grow in a future where love and optimism prevail, where color, ethnicity, or religion are no longer barriers to happiness?
When did this country become a place of fear and disappointment? I believe that those who do wrong should be held accountable, regardless of race or background.
It is time to reflect on the future of this nation. To all Hispanic leaders: the time is now for unity.
Tomorrow is Father’s Day, a day when thousands of families will mourn loved ones who are no longer with them. And across the border, many fathers will feel the heartbreak of being unable to kiss their children or share the little moments that create lasting memories.
To all fathers, near and far, Happy Father’s Day.
May we honor your strength and love, and may we work for a future worthy of our children.
