Today, as the story of Michael Jackson returns to the big screen in Michael, we honor a legacy that never left the field.

In 2022, I captured a moment.

The ROAR Marching Band of Florida Memorial University, only two years old at the time, took the field at Southern University in Baton Rouge and performed “Can’t Help It,” arranged by the late Dr. Richard Beckford .

What we didn’t know then…
was that this young band was on its way to becoming the 2023 ESPN Band of the Year.

I originally released this in September 2022.

Today, I reimagined it.

Layering Michael’s voice back into the sound.
Placing his presence behind the performance.
Because some music doesn’t age… and some spirits never leave it.

Dr. Beckford was a visionary. A builder of sound, culture, and excellence. He arranged and played music you could feel.
And this moment carries both of them.

Their music lives forever.

📣Media Alert 📣 Honored to be featured in this Sundays Detroit Free Press Article “Detroit Is..”

313 Day always hits a little different when you’re from Detroit.

It’s more than an area code.
It’s identity.
It’s pride.
It’s culture.

And today feels especially meaningful.

Growing up in Detroit, the Sunday Detroit Free Press was a whole experience in our house. I remember my grandfather and my mom bringing home that thick paper — the coupons, the comics, the crossword puzzles, all the inserts, and sitting with coffee reading it for hours. It was a ritual.

So the little girl from Detroit in me is still processing the fact that this Sunday I’ll be featured in the Detroit Free Press in their “Detroit Is…” column.

The series highlights inspiring Detroiters and institutions that represent the spirit of this city, and this feature will share my journey as a filmmaker and founder of KORIS Media, along with the story behind my new documentary “Bobby’s Kids.”

This film tells the powerful Detroit story of my band director Mr. Bobby L. Brown and the band culture he built at Mackenzie High School with the “Band of Renown” bringing the HBCU band style to Detroit students and shaping generations of young people.

It’s a story about legacy.
About culture.
About what happens when one person pours into a generation.

And it means a lot to be able to tell that story as one of Bobby’s Kids.

Even more meaningful that this feature is happening during Women’s History Month, highlighting the work of women telling important stories.
