RPD Seeks Two Teens in Northwest Roswell Shootings; Third Suspect Arrested

ROSWELL, New Mexico (WIHINMTX)— The Roswell Police Department (RPD) is actively searching for two teenagers who have outstanding warrants in connection with a pair of connected shooting incidents that occurred in northwest Roswell on Sunday afternoon.

The chaotic chain of events, which began around 4 p.m. on December 7th, left one of the involved teens with a minor gunshot wound.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Humberto Velarde, 18, and Elias Gonzales, 18, who remained at large as of Thursday afternoon.

Velarde is facing charges of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building or from a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence.

Gonzales is charged with conspiracy to commit shooting at a dwelling or occupied building or from a motor vehicle.

RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division pieced together the sequence of events after responding to multiple reports of shots fired:

Initial Shooting (Escalante Court): Investigators believe Velarde was the passenger in a car driven by Gonzales when Velarde allegedly fired shots that struck a house and a car in the 900 block of Escalante Court. Nineteen-year-old Angelo Trujillo was inside the house at the time. The suspects then fled the scene to Velarde’s home on Cambridge Avenue.

Retaliatory Shooting (Cambridge Avenue): Investigators determined that Trujillo subsequently drove to Velarde's residence in the 1800 block of Cambridge Avenue. Trujillo is then accused of shooting at Velarde and Gonzales, striking Velarde in the upper arm and hitting the car they were in.

Velarde later showed up at Lovelace Regional Hospital for treatment of his gunshot injury and was treated and released before investigators had connected him to the initial shooting.

Meanwhile, police located and arrested Angelo Trujillo at the Escalante house. He has been charged with shooting at a dwelling or occupied building or from a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence.

Detectives report that both Trujillo and Velarde are accused of attempting to hide the fi****ms they allegedly used in the shootings.

The Roswell Police Department is urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the location and arrest of Humberto Velarde and Elias Gonzales.

If you have information, please call the Roswell Police Department at 575-624-6770.

Massive Fire Destroys AerSale Building at Roswell Air Center

ROSWELL, New Mexico (WIHINNTX)– A massive fire ripped through a large commercial building at the Roswell Air Center Thursday night, December 4, resulting in a total loss for the structure and its contents. The building, owned by the city airport and leased by the aftermarket airplane parts and maintenance company, AerSale, was completely engulfed in flames.

The fire was first reported around 7:55 p.m. by a passer-by who noticed the roof was on fire and immediately called 911. The blaze spread rapidly, quickly engulfing the entire warehouse-style building, which was primarily constructed of steel and other metals.

Firefighters from the Roswell Fire Department were joined by crews from the Dexter Fire Department and Chaves County's volunteer departments (Sierra, Midway, East Grand Plains, and Berrendo). The large-scale effort to control the inferno lasted for almost two hours, with the fire finally being brought under control around 9:45 p.m.

Crews remained on the scene throughout the night to battle persistent hot spots, finally leaving at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning, December 5. Roswell firefighters returned shortly thereafter to continue hosing down remaining hot spots to prevent the fire from rekindling.

Fortunately, no civilians or firefighters were injured during the incident. AerSale officials confirmed to fire officials that no employees or personnel should have been inside the building at the time, as the workday had concluded earlier.

The building, located on Challenger Street on the east side of the air center, along with its contents—various airplane parts belonging to AerSale—are considered a total loss.

Loud explosions heard during the fire are attributed to propane tanks being compromised by the intense heat, as well as the reaction of fire and water with specific metals housed inside the building.

The site has been secured by air center officials as a multi-agency investigation begins to determine the cause of the fire. The probe is being handled by the RFD Fire Marshal’s Office, the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF).

Despite the significant fire, American Airlines flights at the air center continued as scheduled, and no evacuations of occupied buildings in the area were deemed necessary. Streets closed to traffic during the blaze have since been reopened.

Identity Confirmed: Skeletal Remains Near Artesia Train Tracks Belong to John W. Littleton; Investigation Continues

ARTESIA, New Mexico (WIHINNTX)— The Artesia Police Department has confirmed the identity of the human skeletal remains discovered near the train tracks in September, bringing a partial resolution to a mystery that began in the afternoon on Monday, September 29, 2025.

The remains, found near the 300 block of North 1st Street, have been identified as belonging to John W. Littleton, born in 1972. Mr. Littleton was a transient individual who was last seen alive on May 31, 2022, following his release from the Eddy County Detention Center.

The next of kin has been notified of the identification.

The investigation commenced on Monday, September 29, 2025, at approximately 2:50 PM, after the Artesia Police Department received a call from a BNSF train engineer. The caller reported spotting a portion of a skeleton near the tracks.

Officers and members of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) immediately responded to the scene. During their thorough search, they made a second, more significant discovery: additional human remains were located under a dock behind the old Baker & Stephens Tire Company building.

Police previously stated in a press release that the remains may have been at the location for over a year before being discovered. The remains were transported to the University of New Mexico’s Laboratory of Human Osteology for a full examination and identification, which has now concluded with the positive identification of Mr. Littleton.

While the remains have been identified, the case remains active and ongoing. The official autopsy report is still pending, and detectives are continuing to work diligently on determining the cause and manner of death for Mr. Littleton.

The Artesia Police Department urges anyone who may have information related to this case to contact their detectives immediately at 575-746-5000.

Police: "Drive-By" Shooting Was Actually Staged Inside Home; Stolen Gun Recovered

CLOVIS, New Mexico (WIHINMTX)– A Thursday evening shooting initially reported as a drive-by attack has been determined by detectives to have taken place inside a residence, according to the Clovis Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to a home at approximately 7:32 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, following a 911 call reporting that a man had been shot in the neck. The caller alleged that the victim, identified as their male cousin, was shot by someone driving by the residence.

Upon arrival, first responders found a 23-year-old male with a visible gunshot wound to the neck. He was stabilized at the scene and rushed to Plains Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Authorities report he is currently in stable condition.

While securing the scene, officers discovered a pistol lying against a fence in the yard. Interviews with neighbors further contradicted the initial 911 account, as residents in the immediate area reported they had not heard any gunfire.

Detectives subsequently identified the actual shooting scene as the interior of the home where the victim was found. Following the ex*****on of a search warrant, investigators recovered an expended bullet casing and blood evidence inside the residence.

The firearm found at the scene was determined to have been reported stolen out of Texas.

No arrests have been made as of Friday morning, but police state that arrest warrants are pending. The investigation is active as detectives work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and the false report of a drive-by shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Clovis Police Department.
