Albuquerque, New Mexico (WIHINMTX) – State Police Chief Troy Weisler confirmed Friday in a press conference that a 14-year-old was killed during a shooting on the University of New Mexico (UNM) campus. John Fuentes, an 18-year-old, has been taken into custody in Valencia County, New Mexico, in connection with the incident.
According to State Police, four individuals were engaged in video game play within a dorm room when the shooting transpired. The incident is being classified as isolated, with authorities emphasizing that there is no perceived ongoing danger to the public. The ages of those involved have been identified as 18, 19, and 14 years old.
UNM Police were the initial responders, effectively containing the scene. Albuquerque Police subsequently arrived to provide assistance with campus lockdown procedures. An alert was disseminated to UNM students around 3:30 AM, instructing them to shelter in place. Staff and students were on campus at the time of the shooting, which occurred during freshman orientation week.
State Police are leading the investigation, collaborating with UNM Police, Albuquerque Police, New Mexico State Police, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, and the Alcohol, To***co, and Fi****ms (ATF). The campus remained closed for the majority of the day, with students strategically relocated off-campus.
