Protect It All Securing the Future: Bridging OT and IT with Expert Insights on Cyber Resilience

06/04/2026

"I had a dude wear someone else's face in an interview. I busted him."

Robert Whetstine on the new reality of hiring in cyber.

When he interviews now, he asks candidates to put a hand in front of their face, turn fully left, and turn fully right. Because AI hasn't perfected ears yet. If they won't do it, they probably aren't real.

This is the world your recruiting team is operating in. If you haven't trained them on what to look for, you are about to hire someone who doesn't exist.

"Every time you get a no, think of it as your next dream job being only 50 more nos away. All you have to do is suffer through 50 more gut-wrenching nos, and then you're going to land your dream job."

Robert Whetstine, PrOTect IT All Podcast

The cyber job market in 2026 is brutal. Senior roles getting 800 applications in three days. Junior roles getting 900 in 24 hours. The math is unfriendly.

Robert's response: preparedness plus opportunity is the formula. Every no is a step closer.

"I can teach you technical. I can't teach you not to be a jerk."

Robert Whetstine, Fortune 500 director of information security, hires less-technical candidates with better personality and visible passion every single time. He has watched the cert-stack-first career strategy collapse from the hiring side of the table.

If your career play in 2026 is still "stack more certs," you are optimizing for the wrong variable.

Soft skills are the hiring filter now. The receipts are in the episode.

This week's read, in case you missed it: Part 1 of my deep dive on AI in cyber and OT. The Promise.

Five concrete places the wins are already shipping. Where Andreessen overshoots, where he's dead on. Why the next decade of GRC is compliance as a growth driver, not compliance as overhead. And what it costs you to sit it out.

Part 2 drops next week. The Price. Same technology, same force multiplier, same exponential curve, used by people who don't think like us. Not Terminator. Real impacts: the trust collapse, the career pipeline that breaks in 2031, the OT failure modes that are already happening and have not been publicly reported, and the eight things every CISO should be thinking about now.

Both halves are true at the same time. You need both.

Five things that stuck with me from this week's conversation with Peter Schawacker:

1. Security has one purpose: to protect value, not create it. Every CISO who forgets this drifts into a role that generates heat without revenue, and the business loses patience.

2. AI has exposed 40 years of technical debt we couldn't see or afford to see. Inventory is suddenly the #1 topic in boardrooms again, because every vulnerability discovery tool just got 100x more productive.

3. The cert-first career ladder is collapsing. Very few certs actually map to a job. ARAMIS exists because Peter wanted to assess real job competency against NIST NICE, not test trivia.

4. Cyber was slow to engage with cloud at first, but we're all-in on cloud security now. We can't afford that same lag with AI. The people who matter in three years are the ones already thinking about how to secure AI, not waiting for someone else to figure it out first.

5. Don't chase the money. Chase the work you'd do anyway. The best in any field, chefs, attorneys, engineers, are the ones who can't stop sharpening. AI is rocket fuel if that's you. If it isn't, no credential is going to carry you.

Marc Andreessen wrote in the Techno-Optimist Manifesto that intelligence is the ultimate engine of progress. He is right.

He overshoots when he calls deceleration of AI "a form of murder." That is a Twitter line, not a serious argument.

The serious version of the case is what Peter Schawacker said on the podcast a few weeks ago: "We've got 40 years of technical debt that we couldn't see, or couldn't afford to see. And the cost of vulnerability discovery is going to zero."

That second clause is the entire game. AI does not make vulnerabilities go away. It makes the cost of knowing about them collapse. Inventory is the #1 board topic again because every vulnerability discovery tool just got 100x more productive.

You either lean in, or you watch a peer company do it first and explain to your board why their detection-to-response time dropped 80% while yours didn't move.

"Cybersecurity doesn't create value. It protects it."

Peter Schawacker said this and the room got quiet.

Every CISO who forgets this drifts into a role that generates heat without revenue. Security is a supporting function. It exists to keep the value-creating parts of the business alive. When we forget that, we earn the seat-back. Not the seat at the table.

The CISOs who get a seat at the table are the ones who can articulate what their program protects, in business terms, on the same page leadership is looking at.
