Mighty proud of our guy, Ben McCormick. He is going to do huge things.

Hey everyone, this is sports editor Ben McCormick. I’m checking in one last time to say that today is my last day at The Courier-Times.

I’m moving on to the next step in my career, but today I’m feeling appreciative for this community.

Working at a print newspaper has been a dream of mine since I was 10 years old. I loved holding the newspaper in my hands when I went to my grandfather’s house. I was mesmerized by the stories and pictures about Duke basketball in the Times-News or The News & Observer. Having something physical meant a lot to me.

I’m that same way now. Each week I pick up our paper and I’m filled with immense pride. It’s been an honor to work here and I’m even more honored to have been trusted enough to tell people’s stories.

Thank you to all the coaches, players and people who made me feel at home. Thank you to George, Jessie, Kelly, Lea, Megan, and Tylea for making this newspaper a special place to work.

I wrote some more words you can catch in tomorrow’s paper. But for now, I just wanted to say thank you.

BREAKING NEWS — Roger Wilkerson pled guilty to first degree murder in the September 2022 death of Nancy "Nan" Horton Monday in Person County Superior Court. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Roger Wilkerson also pled guilty to other related charges and received an additional minimum of 10 2/3 years.
His son, Troy Wilkerson, pled guilty to second degree murder and multiple related charges and received a minimum sentence of 24 years and would have the possibility of parole. Troy Wilkerson was 16 years old at the time of the incident.
We'll have much more on this in this week's C-T.

EDIT — Troy Wilkerson will serve a minimum sentence of 24 years and a maximum of almost 31 years. For the second degree murder, Troy Wilkerson was sentenced to between 225-282 months. For a host of other related charges, Troy Wilkerson was sentenced to between 51-74 months. The sentences will be served consecutively and Troy Wilkerson will not be able to start the second sentence until he serves the first, plus 12 months.
Troy Wilkerson was not eligible for life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty because he was 16 at the time of the offense.

It’s prom season in Person County. We want to see your favorite folks looking as only they can look for the prom. Last week, it was Person…tonight is RCS’s turn.
Post your pics and maybe just maybe we’ll get them in for the C-T’s graduation special section.
Here’s a little inspiration…one of the C-T’s own. ❤️
