You may have seen a billboard in our community suggesting that Person Memorial Hospital could close. While perhaps well intended, this sign was created by an outside organization that is not connected to our hospital and is misleading. Person Memorial remains open and committed to our mission of making communities healthier.

We think this sign is related to the national One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA) that passed a few months ago. This bill outlines potential adjustments to Medicaid funding at the state level, along with other proposed federal changes. Understandably, this has raised concern across North Carolina and across the country.

Medicaid is essential in helping our patients access care, especially in rural communities like ours. While recent funding changes have created challenges across North Carolina, we remain focused on caring for our patients and working with state and federal leaders to advocate for sustainable healthcare funding.

We understand that these messages have raised concern for some in our community. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has accurate information about our hospital’s continued commitment to care and reassure you that Person Memorial has no plans to close and does not expect potential Medicaid cuts to change that. We remain committed to investing in our people, services, and community as we live out our mission of making communities healthier.

BREAKING: A post-game physical altercation broke out between the players and coaches of the Person High School and Hugh M. Cummings High School football teams Friday night in Burlington. The fight marred a 40-28 road victory by Person. The Courier-Times was on the field when the incident occurred.

The altercation began with an exchange of words between Person and Cummings players and coaches at midfield following the post-game hand-shake line. This quickly escalated into a physical fight involving numerous members of each team.

As the altercation grew in size and severity, law enforcement on site responded by using pepper spray on coaches and players.

We will have more on the altercation later today and in our next print edition.
