Lick the Plate

Lick the Plate With 2000+ guests LTP is the original culinary, culture and music radio/podcast feature in San Diego, Detroit and Northern Michigan.

Also a weekly column in The Coast News in Encinitas, CA. Lick the Plate can be heard on 101.5 KGB in San Diego, 93.9 The River in Detroit/Windsor and Q100 in Northern Michigan. It is also a weekly feature in The Coast News in San Diego. It's a food and music feature featuring guests from the culinary, culture and music scenes. The interviews give the listening audience an opportunity to really get

to know each guests through their tastes in food and music. LTP gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how our guest's careers began, their love for food, what music moves them, along with where they eat and drink around town. Ok, enough about plate licking. Let me start by detailing how I developed my passion for all things culinary. Growing up in suburban Detroit, there was a great variety of ethnic food, from the Polish restaurants to the Jewish Delis and of course the ever-present Coney Islands. Add a smattering of world-class eateries in the ritzier suburbs and my lowbrow and highbrow exposure to food was taking shape, more so on the lowbrow end of things. That is until I scored the ultimate summer job as First Mate on a corporate yacht in the Grosse Point Yacht Club. Guest chefs imported from exotic locations every summer catered our day trips with the best gourmet food available. This was combined with a month long trip around the Great Lakes with a yacht full of Detroit socialite foodies whose mantra was to pack light to save room for the Dom Perignon and Stags Leap. I could have easily become quite the food snob after 3 summers of this culinary hedonism, but all that gourmet food on a daily basis actually made me crave White Castles and stacked corned beef sandwiches even more. My evolving food passion was fueled by a stint as a personal assistant/chef in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, years of business travel that took me around the country and world, good friends immersed in the culinary world as chefs and educators, and working as the restaurant writer for the Surf City Times and now Coast News and Edible San Diego. This all lead to the formation of my marketing firm eight years ago which I named Artichoke Creative that always counts culinary clients among our favorites and my weekly writing gig with the Coast News. My passion for food is a reflection of my eclectic tastes in everything and my job as a marketer and storyteller. Since I am just at home in a dive bar serving killer burgers as I am in the latest hotspot dishing up some hot new culinary trend, expect variety. And remember, it’s ok to Lick the Plate!

Exploring the lowbrow side of Lick the Plate The Coast News this week as I feature different take on fast food...a "regret scale" of sorts that details the level of compunction felt after consuming junk food from several national chains. On that note, Popeyes got the best score...actually really enjoy their offerings in moderation. https://thecoastnews.com/ltp-fast-food-favorites/

At the risk of over-posting, I'll frame this as a PSA for schnitzel loving Justin Tootla Jennifer Jackson Gilcrest Farms fans because all of that is coming together right now with their Caesar on top of Schnitzel in Suttons Bay that is my current obsession on a stellar menu. I mean seriously, you have a beautiful chop type Caesar sitting on the perfect Schnitzel, dressing running down, eyes rolling back, and it's just perfect. I go back a bit with this Wilco loving couple who I first recorded with at Voyager. Now they are in Suttons Bay? Um, yes please more and more! That's all, carry on but eat this if you can.

Our LTP "Fish Stories" feature started as a fun idea for a show 10 years ago with Captain Mark Mihelich of Boundless Boat Charters and became an annual favorite feature, eventually expanding into Michigan with Fishbilly Captain Bill Stephenson, Osprey Charters Captain Chris Oosse and serious fishermen like Paul Wright and Darrin DeBastos. We thought it appropriate to record a show to celebrate 10 years and record it off the coast of San Diego aboard Boundless. Thanks to all these guys who are among the best at what they do anywhere. Revisiting Mr. Peabody's Encinitas 13 years later for The Coast News Lick the Plate feature and hot damn it's still stellar on so many levels. I don't see three, full size artichoke halves cooked perfectly with exposed hearts for easy artichoke lollipops for $8.99 around much anywhere. And the Prime Dip made me forget Philippe the Original *Official Page for a hot second...actually like 20 minutes. But it really is many notches above a standard French Dip. And then the music...loaded with an eclectic mix of bands including one of my faves Brendagail. Thanks Brie Cardosa for keeping it real and a kitchen that does it right.
