History is catching up.

The Recording Academy has confirmed that Fela Anikulapo Kuti will be honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026, nearly three decades after his passing. Long overdue, but undeniable.

Fela didn’t just make music, he built a movement. Afrobeat, activism, resistance, culture. The same system that once ignored his impact is now officially recognizing it on the world’s biggest music stage.

The award will be presented during the 2026 Grammy Special Merit Awards, ahead of the main ceremony. Fela joins a legendary list of global icons being honoured for shaping music beyond charts and trends.

This isn’t just a win for Nigeria.
It’s a win for African music, for legacy, and for every artist who chose truth over comfort.

🇳🇬🎶 Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards 🤩

Kuti will be bestowed this honor alongside other international heavyweights, including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon. In an official statement on the matter, Harvey Mason Jr, CEO of the Recording Academy, describes the honorees as “an extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music.” 🙌🏾
