Owen Gray (musician): Born in Jamaica on July 5, 1939, Owen Gray is known as Jamaica's first homegrown singing star. He began his music career by winning a talent contest at age nine. By age twelve, he mastered drums, guitar, and keyboards. He attended the Alpha Boys School. Gray's career includes R&B, ska, rocksteady, and reggae. He was the first singer to record a song praising Clement Dodd's Sir Coxsone Downbeat system in 1959 with "On the Beach". He had a number one hit in Jamaica with "Please Let Me Go" in 1960. Gray has collaborated with producers such as Clement Dodd, Prince Buster, Duke Reid, Leslie Kong, and Clancy Eccles. His discography includes albums like "Loving Reggae, Vol. 2" (2022), "I Was Born to Be Loved" (2022), and "Jamaica's First Home Grown Star" (2019). In 2024, the Jamaican government honored him with an Order of Distinction.
