Fire Update
Crews made significant progress today securing large portions of the fire line on the north and south sides of the
fire. Fire containment increased to 47%. The fire received light rain in the afternoon.
The Camp Fire is within the Fort Stanton - Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area. It is a unique area co-
managed by the BLM and the State of Lincoln County Fire Serviceles of cave passages that run below the fire
area and beyond. BLM cave specialists determined none of the caves were damaged by the fire. They attribute this
to the low intensity of the fire, previous thinning operations and past prescribed fire operations.
Note: The next fire update will be released tomorrow evening.
Closures:
• Fort Stanton is closed. It will reopen Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 10 am.
• Rob Jaggers Campground, and the Rio Bonito and West Mesa Road dispersed camping areas are closed and
will remain closed until firefighting efforts have concluded.
• Highway 220 will reopen tomorrow morning.

fort in New Mexico. It is one of the largest historical sites in the state. The 240-acre site and 88 buildings are best
known for its roles in the Indian Wars and the Civil War. However, over its 160-year history Fort Stanton has also
seen the lawless days of Billy the Kid, hosted patients at its hospital during the tuberculosis epidemic and became
an internment camp for German sailors and Japanese Americans during World War II. Now it is accommodating
firefighters as they work to contain the fire that nearly destroyed the site.

Fire Update
Yesterday firefighters and air support responded to the Camp Fire in the Ft. Stanton area. Six large air tankers, two
single-engine air tankers, one type-1 helicopter, and one type-3 helicopter responded to the fire, along with several

of the fire and will continue to secure the fire line created yesterday on the south side. Fire activity has decreased
compared to yesterday.

between US 380 and Devils Canyon turn off.
Closures: Highway 220 is closed in the Fort Stanton area. Please stay away from the fire area to allow fire personnel
