Cold winter weather does more than just chill the air. Snow and ice create treacherous walking surfaces that significantly increase the likelihood of falls. Research shows that outdoor fall-related injuries surge during winter months, with icy and snowy surfaces contributing heavily to these statistics. Ice, snow, and refrozen patches – especially thin, nearly invisible “black ice” – pose dangerous footing for pedestrians because they reduce traction and can hide underlying hazards. Snow cover can obscure cracks, elevation changes, and obstacles that otherwise might be obvious.

Winter conditions don’t affect everyone equally. Older adults are particularly vulnerable due to balance and mobility challenges, making even minor slips potentially serious. Urban pedestrians, who frequently walk sidewalks, steps, and transit access areas, face heightened exposure. Additionally, workers such as delivery personnel and retail staff who navigate icy entryways or outdoor walkways as part of their jobs encounter elevated risk daily.
