For this week’s Memory Monday, we’re sharing a message from the past that still speaks clearly today.

The April 10, 1974 issue read:
A wooden plaque above our bread and butter press says:
“Our Mission: To Work; To Live; To act a kind and earnest role; To aim to do right and fear nothing; To make this effort of ours stand for good and not for gold.”

It was composed by Ralph Tennal, who died over 85 years ago. Long before modern mission statements and slogans, these words reminded those working at the newspaper what mattered most — honest work, courage, and serving the community for good rather than profit.

Some memories are more than photographs or headlines. Sometimes they are the values left behind.

Fun Fact Friday!
This May 6, 1920, advertisement from Meyer’s Furniture Store in Sabetha promoted the “Golden Throated Claxtonola Talking Machine” as “a thing of beauty” that would bring “pleasure, entertainment and enjoyment” to families and friends.
The ad invited customers to come in for a demonstration of the new phonograph and highlighted that “The Claxtonola Plays All Records.” It also promoted payment plans with the line, “pay for it while you are enjoying its charms.”
Even more than 100 years ago, businesses were using catchy slogans and flexible payment options to attract customers.
