Minutes before Chia Neng Vue was arrested a Ring camera captured a federal agent say, "Hey buddy,” to the 5-year-old who opened the door "Is your dad home?” Vue is among 15 Hmong individuals recently arrested in June in Minnesota currently facing deportation.

At the Sacramento Iu Mien Festival, friends could be seen hugging for the first time in years, wearing bright traditional clothing and enjoying home-cooked meals.

Organized by the Sacramento Iu Mien Association, the fourth annual festival, held at Hiram Johnson High School on Saturday, June 21, celebrated Mien culture and brought together community members that wound up in America after the Vietnam War. According to Pew Research Center, Greater Sacramento is home to the largest Mien population in America, after San Francisco.

While events like these help create space for community to gather, there’s still work to be done to preserve the culture in America, especially as more Mien take on more leadership positions locally — from doctors to political staffers — according to Sacr

Three Rivers, Calif., native Jay O’Connell didn’t know the word ‘Hmong’ and couldn’t even pronounce it when he drove up from the L.A. area to visit his deceased family members who are buried in the cemetery there. Three Rivers, a community at the edge of Sequoia National Park, has a population slightly over 2000.

He discovered, 24 Hmong headstones, which prompted his interest and led O'Connell to research Hmong history and why the Hmong bury their relatives in areas surrounded by mountains.

Today, the Executive Department of the State of California recognized Immigrant Heritage Month. The proclamation acknowledged the immigrant community's contribution to the state, making California the fourth largest economy, with nearly 11 million immigrants calling the state home, and contributing $61.8 billion in state and local taxes in 2023 the proclamation states in part.

After completing two tours in Vietnam, John Stryker Meyer returned to Trenton, NJ to complete the college education he’d left behind before the war at Trenton State College, where he was editor of the college newspaper, The Signal.

“We would go in to get downed pilots or get out any dead team members if we could. We would carry more ammo, more hand grenades, bandages, body bags, no food, and one canteen of water,” Meyer remembered.
