SELFISH PARENTS TRIED TO STOP ME FROM EATING ON A FLIGHT BECAUSE THEIR “FRAGILE” KID MIGHT MELT DOWN—SO I STOOD MY GROUND I was flying from Chicago to Seattle, completely wiped out and in desperate need of something to eat. As someone with Type 1 diabetes, going too long without food isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. I quietly reached into my bag and began to unwrap a protein bar when the woman sitting next to me leaned over and whispered sharply, “Can you not eat that? Our son is very sensitive.” The kid—maybe nine—wasn’t dealing with any obvious health issue. Just sulking, arms crossed, clearly used to being coddled and catered to. I exhaled slowly and slipped the bar back into my bag, deciding I’d just hold off until the in-flight service began. Eventually, the flight attendant rolled up with the snack cart. I asked for a snack box and a Coke—but before she could respond, the dad cut in with a firm, “No food or drinks for this row, please.” I blinked in disbelief and pressed the call button. The dad shot me a glare and said, “Our son gets really upset when people eat near him. Can you be respectful and just not eat?” Then the mom actually leaned over me to tell the flight attendant, “She’ll pass on snacks, thanks.” At that point, I was livid.
