What was it like to be on a 4-month cruise aboard Crystal Serenity when it was abruptly cut short? An ITN subscriber shares the details.

My wife, Eileen, and I were sailing on the Crystal Serenity when Crystal Cruises (www.crystalcruises.com) emailed on Jan. 19, “Today, Crystal is announcing that it has suspended operations for its Ocean and Expedition ships through April 29, 2022.” Our ship was to prematurely end its voyage in A...

Discover why Rick Steves believes being a foodie takes a whole new meaning in Venice, where an exuberance for the local food culture is like no other, especially when dining like a local.

While locals celebrate their cuisine in every country, Italy is perhaps the most exuberant about their food culture. Here’s an example of how going for a simple walk with a friend from Venice can become a lesson in expert eating. • At sunset I meet my Venetian hotelier friend, Piero, and we head...

What's cooking in Belize? Learn how to make the most of plantains and coconut milk when cooking Hudut, a traditional Garífuna dish.

In October 2021 I booked a trip to Belize. Why Belize, you may ask? An internet search showed that Belize was proactive in protecting people from COVID. Not only did visitors have to show a COVID-free test on arrival, they had to stay in COVID-compliant hotels. Face masks, social distancing and curf...

Discover why two ITN subscribers determined that Seychelles offers the perfect tropical getaway.

After 18 months of being cooped up due to the Covid pandemic, my friend Elyse Meltzer and I were ready for a stress-free tropical getaway. It seemed like the perfect post-trip extension to a Uganda safari we had booked for July 2021. Furthermore, our research indicated that Seychelles was the first....

Along a heart-pounding Alpine mountain edge, Rick Steves discovers the hearty edelweiss is similar to the traditional Swiss culture in one particular way. Learn how.

It’s a glorious Swiss Alps morning. I’m spending my day walking with my schoolteacher friend, Olle, exploring the alpine landscape high above his home in Gimmelwald. We come to a bluff and pause to look down at his village. It’s a pastoral setting — a zigzag in the narrow paved service road ...

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM ITN'S EDITOR

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond our control, International Travel News is ceasing publication.

We had hoped to outlast the effects of COVID on the travel industry, but it has taken such a toll that it has become financially impossible for ITN to continue. The April 2022 issue is our last, and the more-than-difficult decision to stop publishing was reached after that issue was sent to the printer — the reason this farewell was not included within it.

March 1976 was when the first issue of ITN was printed and mailed, the brain-child of the original publisher, the late Armond Noble, who noticed something about travel publications: they were filled with glowing accounts written by people who had been paid to travel. What was needed was a place where consumer travelers could share what they REALLY experienced while traveling, both the good AND the bad.

The concept Armond came up with was a magazine written by its subscribers, and he was not afraid to print their criticisms of airlines, tours, cruises, etc. — something unheard of at that time. The result was decades of exciting travel accounts, helpful warnings, numerous travel tips, interesting exchanges and just plain fun. A legacy to be proud of!

ITN's publisher, Helen Noble, ITN's staff and I thank our Contributing Editors and all of YOU who have supported this magazine these 46 years. Whether you subscribed, submitted travel reports or photos or spread the word about this publication — the original travelers' forum — your contributions were what made it possible. We also thank the many companies who advertised in ITN, without whom we would not have made it this far.

Should you know of anyone interested in purchasing ITN to carry on what Armond started, please email Helen at [email protected].

Our wonderful adventure is completed, but we hope you will continue to use the information that was presented in the magazine, appreciating the spirit with which it was shared, to enhance your future explorations of the globe.

Thank you, again, from all of us at ITN.

Note: Starting April 13, 2022, user accounts on the ITN website will be disabled. The online forum (Message Board) also will be shut down. However, an archived and searchable copy of the website will continue to be available at the current web address, www.intltravelnews.com — a library of our subscribers' articles and letters. The archived site will be available at no cost and will remain accessible through at least 2024.
Word of future plans for the site, if any, would be posted there. In the meantime, questions (including inquiries from anyone with interest in carrying on the website) may be directed to [email protected].

Sitting in the shadow of the Acropolis, the Agora was the one-time heart of Athens. Learn the stories it left behind in its ruins in this month's Focus on Archaeology.

I’m standing at the entrance to the Athenian Agora (Adrianou 24; phone 30 210 321 0180 or 0185) in Athens waiting for my husband, Paul, to pay for our entry tickets. The line on this sunny afternoon in October 2021 is unexpectedly long. As I wait, I notice a small group of tourists also waiting wh...

It's not every day you get to tour the work of a renowned painter, sculptor and architect with the artist himself. But that's exactly what happened for ITN subscribers on a chance encounter at the Baan Dam Museum.

Ron Carlson of Lakeland, Minnesota, asked ITN subscribers to write in about serendipitous experiences that they had while traveling outside of the US. Under various categories, a number of your stories have been printed in the April through November 2021 issues. This month’s offerings fall under t...

Discover the magic of the land of lemurs, baobab trees and the Tsingy in Nili Olay's winning essay about Madagascar.

“Mad about Madagascar” was the topic of ITN’s last essay contest, and the winning essay (as judged by ITN staff) was that of NILI OLAY of Naples, Florida, who will be sent an ITN mug. The current topic in the contest is “Rushin’ to Russia.” If you are an ITN subscriber and have been to R...
