🥃🍣 Last day of the Sacramento-themed cocktail menu at Kru, and what a menu it was!

The way each cocktail highlighted local history, neighborhoods, iconic businesses, and landmarks made it one of the most creative menus I’ve experienced. I spent almost as much time reading the stories as I did enjoying the drinks. Looking back, I probably should have asked if I could buy the menu as a keepsake.

We ordered the Vic’s and Hard Rock Cafe cocktails, and both were memorable. The Vic’s drank like a liquid banana split—playful, nostalgic, and delicious.

The nigiri and King’s Roll were experiences of their own. Each bite delivered a melody of flavors that made you want to pause, close your eyes, and appreciate the symphony unfolding on your palate.

Now I’m excited to see what Kru unveils next. Summer is almost here, and I’m ready for the next chapter of their cocktail program. 🍸☀️

🥃 Clever Visual Metaphor

This one stopped me in my tracks when I saw the ingredient list. Especially the grenadine. But after making it, I understood. The grenadine acts like the scaffolding, tying together a surprisingly complex mix of bourbon, Ramazzotti, Fernet, and Islay Scotch.

My Version

• 1½ oz Bourbon (original 1 oz)

• ¾ oz Amaro Ramazzotti

• ¼ oz Fernet Branca

• ¼ oz Grenadine

• ⅛ oz Islay Scotch

Stir, strain, express a lemon peel, and discard.

If you try it, let me know what flavors stand out to you. 🥃

Poolside sipping after a long day of house and yard work. ☀️🌴🥃

Keeping it simple with an easy Umeshu Old Fashioned: I use one of the small 50ml bottles of Choya and then refill the bottle with Wild Turkey 101. Fast, easy, and perfectly balanced with sweet plum notes, citrus, oak, and spice.

No measuring cups, no fuss — just pour over ice and relax by the pool. 🍑🥃🧊

Tucked into the corner of Greenback and Filbert in Orangevale, Mode Brewing & Kitchen is one of those unassuming neighborhood spots that quietly does everything well—craft beer, cider, handmade pastas, pizza, and desserts that make it impossible to leave without something sweet. Built from the original Pasta a la Mode food truck, this family-run brewery and kitchen has grown into a true local gathering place with a relaxed patio, koi pond, live music, and a menu made from scratch.

Started things off with the Vampire Slayer pizza, which absolutely deserves its reputation, then shared the deep fried artichokes and a shrimp pasta dish that reminded us why handmade pasta hits differently. And dessert? Nana’s ice cream cake balls were the perfect finish. Dangerous little things.

I heard one of the owners is currently fighting cancer, so there was only one choice for a drink: the “Screw Cancer” cider. Had to raise a glass in her honor and send every bit of good energy toward healing, perseverance, and recovery. Cheers to strength, community, and the people behind places like this that put so much heart into what they create. ❤️🍻🍕🍝

A small intimate night built on curiosity and the desire to dig a little deeper.

I’ve been sipping sake since my first visit to a Japanese restaurant over twenty years ago. Back then, I always ordered it warm. It wasn’t until moving to Sacramento that I experienced chilled sake for the first time and started picking up delicate floral notes, crisp apple, and the layered character that makes sake so fascinating.

Now I’m diving further into the many styles and variations of sake, learning more with every pour. As a foodie, pairing it with fresh seafood and making it a sushi night felt like the perfect way to explore the journey ahead.

Looking forward to discovering more bottles, flavors, traditions, and pairings along the road ahead. 🍶🍣✨

Old King Cole Martini for Bitter Laughter 🍸👑

“…was a merry old soul…”

This Martini traces back to Maison Premiere in Williamsburg, Brooklyn — the iconic oyster and absinthe bar known for reviving elegant old-school cocktail service. The drink became widely celebrated through The Maison Premiere Almanac and modern Martini culture.

✨ Old King Cole Martini
3 oz Old Raj 110 Proof Gin
1/4 oz Bordiga Extra Dry Vermouth
3 dashes Angostura Orange Bitters

Stirred ice cold and served with Castelvetrano olives and a lemon twist. Rich, silky, citrusy, and beautifully spirit-forward. The orange bitters and saffron notes from the gin make this one feel both classic and decadent.

An evening of Women in Wine & Sake with Les Dames d’Escoffier Sacramento turned into a fascinating exploration of how much our senses shape flavor and experience.

Carrie Boyle .mindful.glass guided us through the architecture of wine and our own tasting abilities—breaking down how aroma, texture, balance, memory, and environment all influence what we perceive in the glass.

Then sake sommelier Tayler Pecha Omakase Porfavor led us through three very different sakes paired with bites from Bella Bru Catering. Each pairing shifted the experience in unexpected ways—sometimes enhancing the sake, sometimes letting the food become brighter and more expressive through the sake itself. One of the most memorable moments was tasting succinic acid on its own, learning how it contributes to the savory umami character so distinctive in sake.

We finished the evening revisiting wine in a completely different way: tasting while listening to different songs to explore how music changes perception, mood, and even flavor interpretation. It was a reminder that tasting is never just about what is in the glass—it is also about atmosphere, emotion, memory, and connection.

Always grateful for experiences that make me slow down, pay attention, and rethink flavor from a new perspective.

Capping off the weekend the right way at Zelda’s Pizza 🍕🥃

Walked in, grabbed seats at the counter, and instantly felt welcomed with menus, drinks, and great hospitality. We ordered a salad and pizza, and they thoughtfully split both for us without even asking. Those little touches always stand out.

Finished the meal with a batched Black Manhattan with cream — such a rich and comforting after dinner drink. We also got to taste a few local vodkas and learned some fun cocktail ideas along the way. The chili vodka from St. George Spirits, I will order as a gimlet next time while the dill pickle and horseradish vodkas from .spirits would absolutely shine in a Bloody Mary-style cocktail. 🌶️🥒🍸

One of the best parts of the night was sitting next to a few regulars. The bartender saw them walk in and already had their drinks mixed and ready as they sat down. Such a beautiful thing to witness — the kind of care, memory, and hospitality that turns a neighborhood spot into a community. They were wonderful to chat with too, and we left with even more local gems added to our list.

Sometimes the best nights are simple: good food, good drinks, and good people. 🍕✨ Hospitality
