Susurrus Literary Journal

Susurrus Literary Journal susurrus: n. a soft whispering or rustling sound; a murmur. Susurrus is a the Literary Journal of Sacramento City College for current and alumni students.

Sacramento City College is proud of its thriving creative writing and literary program. Creative writing instructors Albert Garcia, Jan Haag, and Tom Miner founded Susurrus in 1992 to bring the work of their Sacramento City College students to a wider audience. Since 1994, students have produced annual editions of Susurrus, the SCC Literary Journal. Also, the college’s River City Writers Series ha

s brought some of the country’s finest poets, fiction writers and essayists to campus to read and discuss writing techniques with students.

Dear Susurrus Contributors and Supporters,

By now you are likely aware that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as of March 18, all campuses in the Los Rios Community College District have suspended all on-ground operations and that classes are now being conducted remotely. The Los Rios Chancellor's Office recently sent out a message that our campuses will remain closed for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester and that classes will be offered solely online in the summer. This means that, regrettably, our Susurrus release event scheduled for May 9 will have to be postponed until a later date.

While this is not news we had ever wanted to have to give you, there IS good news: The 25th Anniversary Edition of Susurrus WILL be published, and we WILL hold our release event, just perhaps a few months later than originally planned. The book is currently in the later design stages, and it will go to print as soon as we are able to get it printed. Once it's printed, we'll find a way to give you a little sneak peek into it, just so you can all see how wonderful a publication it is. In the meantime, we will be sending out a message to all of the contributors to let them know what's happening. Rest assured, you will get to hold your very own copy of Susurrus in your hands, and your contributions will be celebrated in a campus event, most likely in early September (fingers crossed that we'll be back to normal operations by then!)

The staff of Susurrus would like to thank you for your contributions to our 25th Anniversary Edition. We appreciate your continued support as we work our way through an unprecedented time. Stay well, and take care of yourselves and each other. ❤️

The staff of Susurrus has been working hard to wrap up the selection process for our 25th Anniversary Edition. This pile represents just some of the over 100 submissions of prose and poetry submitted by current and former Sacramento City College Students; we are currently working on selecting art and photography submissions, so if you have something you'd like to submit, you still have until midnight on February 28! Send your photos, in jpeg format (highest resolution possible, please) to: [email protected].

If you have submitted written pieces and one or more of them was accepted for publication, you have received messages from the staff, so be sure to check your e-mail! Acceptance messages for art and photo submissions will follow later, by mid-March. Thank you for helping us to make our 25th Anniversary Edition a special one!

01/27/2020

Happy New Year, all! The Staff of Susurrus was hard at work all last semester discussing and selecting written pieces for our 25th anniversary edition. We still have a few left to discuss, so we have not yet sent out final acceptance notifications. We anticipate that these will go out shortly -- by the first week in February at the latest -- so if you have submitted poetry, fiction, and/or creative non-fiction, check your e-mail between February 1 and February 5!

In the meantime, we are still accepting photography and other visual art submissions (drawings, paintings, sculpture, digital art, comics, etc.) These should be submitted no later than Friday, February 28 at 5:00 p.m. Submissions should be in jpeg format, highest possible resolution, and e-mailed to the Susurrus Staff at: [email protected]. (Note: Acceptance notifications for photography and art pieces will go out in mid-March at the latest).

We look forward to hearing from you!

Attention current and former Sacramento City College student photographers and artists: WE NEED YOUR PHOTOS AND ARTWORK!

Susurrus is still accepting submissions of photography and other visual arts (sketches/drawings, paintings, mixed-media pieces, cartoons, digital art, photographs) for our 25th Anniversary Edition. We are looking for a variety of pieces on an array of subjects, including (but certainly not limited to) Sacramento City College itself and the city of Sacramento.)

Please submit, by no later than Monday, February 10 before midnight, your pieces (highest resolution possible, please). All drawings, paintings, etc. should be photographed and submitted in highest resolution possible -- we may, if necessary, ask to re-photograph these if they are accepted).

Please submit all photographs and artwork to the staff at: [email protected]. We look forward to receiving your submissions!
