Big news out of Sacramento: UC Davis Health executive Jita Pandya Buño has been named the next CEO of UW Medical Center in Seattle, effective Sept. 1.

Jita has led as Senior VP and Associate COO at UC Davis Health, overseeing operations at the UC Davis Medical Center while spearheading major initiatives like the 48X Complex. A U.S. Naval Air Forces veteran, Navy intelligence officer, and proud CSU Sacramento alum, she brings a mission-driven leadership style grounded in operational strength and community service.

As one of our Women Who Mean Business honorees earlier this year, Jita’s next chapter will be one to watch.

🎬 California just supercharged its commitment to film and TV production, and Sacramento is squarely in the spotlight.

Absolutely loved covering this story. At Governor Gavin Newsom’s press conference, City of Sacramento was mentioned several times as an emerging film hub, with real potential to benefit from the $750 million expansion of the state’s film and TV tax credit program.

From workforce development to location diversity and local rebates, our capital city has a real shot at becoming a major player in the industry’s next chapter. This investment may bolster SoCal’s return to industry dominance; it could also turbocharge opportunities across NorCal as well.

Also great insights from Sacramento film commissioner Jennifer West.

📍 New housing. New pipeline. New possibilities.

UC Davis has opened ANOVA Aggie Square, a new 199,000 sq. ft. student housing facility in Sacramento’s innovation district, marking a major step in supporting the region’s future health care workforce.

The six-story building brings 252 beds and 190 units for medical and nursing students just steps from UC Davis Medical Center and adjacent research labs. Developed in partnership with GMH Communities and Wexford Science & Technology, the project aligns affordable, wellness-focused housing with academic and clinical demands.

🏥 Designed with student wellness in mind
🏠 Prioritizes first-year med/nursing students
🤝 A model for future UC public-private housing partnerships
💼 Directly supports Sacramento’s health care talent pipeline

Great insights from John Marx, Vice Provost, Aggie Square / Interim Director, UC Center Sacramento and Lizanne Shera-Seitz, marketing specialist for Student Housing and Dining Services.

It’s looking more and more like Sacramento's popular soul music festival, Sol Blume won’t be happening this year. The festival faces a $1.5M lawsuit, unanswered questions about refunds, and growing silence from its organizers. I looked into the legal filings, missing communications, and what this could mean for Sacramento’s festival scene. Article in comments.

Sacramento’s newest fitness destination has officially opened its doors.

Life Time Inc. Arden is now welcoming members at the historic Arden Hills Country Club site, transforming the 1953-era country club into a 78,000-square-foot modern wellness hub with fitness floors, Olympic-sized pools, pickleball courts, yoga studios, and more.

I toured the facility with Senior Lead General Rob Chemaly, who walked me through the club’s vision of lifestyle-based wellness and community impact.

Located at 1220 Arden Hills Lane, the newly launched club marks Life Time’s latest investment in the region, with $12.5M spent to acquire the property and a multi-phase renovation still underway. Kudos to the Life Time team of Natalie Bushaw, Daniel DeBaun , Liudmila Litvinova, MBA on the grand opening.

🎾 Outdoor courts
🧘‍♀️ Spa & recovery zones
🏊 Two Olympic pools
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family-friendly memberships
💼 200+ jobs expected

More on what this means for health, fitness, workforce, and lifestyle in Sacramento in my full story at the Sacramento Business Journal.

Access Maintained. Disruption Averted.

Sutter Health and Aetna, a CVS Pharmacy Health Company have finalized a new multiyear agreement that preserves in-network access to Sutter’s hospitals, clinics and care teams for Aetna HMO, PPO and EPO members across Northern California and the Central Coast.

The renewed contract ensures continuity of care for thousands of patients, including hundreds in the Sacramento region, who were at risk of losing access had negotiations stalled.

“This renewed agreement with Aetna reflects our shared commitment to the communities we serve,” said Sutter Health CEO Warner Thomas

More details in my latest for the Sacramento Business Journal.

Thousands of state workers will continue working remotely until 2026.

This facility will house the Center for Health Technology and play a critical role in advancing digital health, workforce development, and culturally competent care for underserved communities.

Big moves happening in Sacramento’s MedTech and public health landscape.

On the ground in Folsom covering a big move in regional health care.

Sutter Health broke ground this week on its $145 million Folsom Care Complex, a project that’s about workforce, access and what the future may look like for the Greater Sacramento region.

This new campus will bring 80–100 permanent jobs, 30 new physicians, and hundreds of construction roles in partnership with local firms like Elliott Homes and Mark III. Leaders like Sutter Health CEO Warner Thomas and Division President Rachael McKinney emphasized how this investment fits into a broader push for sustainable growth, community care, and economic development.

Grateful to be there covering it all for the Sacramento Business Journal.

Had a great time at the Women Who Mean Business Alumni Mixer at Mulvaney’s last week, an inspiring prelude to this week’s Women Who Mean Business event at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento.

SBJ staff rolled deep, showing love and support for this powerhouse community of women leaders, trailblazers, and change-makers. The energy in the room was all the way up, connections made, stories shared, and momentum building for what’s to come.

More highlights from the main event later this week. Until then, here’s a peek at the vibe from the mixer. Sacramento Business Journal
