This project is called Jesus’ Friends and is based in Visakhapatnam, a city in southern India. Here is how we began our work. Initially, we focused on women and children who faced injustice, and later we expanded to serve people living with HIV/AIDS.
We are often asked how these individuals became infected. Not all of them led immoral lives, as the virus can be transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood or breast milk. For example, if a husband leads an immoral lifestyle, he can infect his wife, who might then pass the virus to their child during pregnancy or childbirth.
Families of HIV-positive individuals often face many unexpected expenses. If HIV is left untreated, a person’s immune system becomes so weakened that their body cannot fight infections. In the later stages of the disease, conditions such as cancer, lung diseases, or nervous system disorders may develop.
Patients may fall into depression and lose the meaning of life. They may feel isolated and experience fear of death. Even those who contracted the virus through no fault of their own can feel guilt and shame.
