“I think we played really well as a team,” Joel Mather said. “That’s what we’ve done more of compared to last year. We’ve also gotten a lot bigger, stronger and our shots were just hitting. We’ve been putting in a lot of work so it means a lot to win by that many, but we’ve got to keep going and don’t let this effect us. We have to keep pushing, keep working hard.”

Don’t go calling it “Splash Harbor” just yet.

The crowd filled The American Hotel’s porch and spilled onto the sidewalk and Main Street, where Sag Harbor Village Police had blocked off the northbound lane to accommodate the gathering.

Most days, especially around the holidays, The American Hotel gets pretty crowded around happy hour. But Sag Harbor’s favorite gathering place was more crowded than usual on Monday.

Bridgehampton School Teachers Association co-leaders Joseph Pluta and Caitlin Hansen in late November described a “toxic working environment” at the K through 12 school.

This week, they came forward with specifics — laying the blame directly at the feet of Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly, in the midst of negotiations over a new contract after the previous one expired at the end of the last school year. The teachers have been working without a new contract, carrying on under the terms of the old contract, since then.

Bridgehampton teachers showed up en masse at the School Board meeting in November, in matching union shirts, and have been outspoken recently about what they say are their struggles.

Jeff Peters said the event was being organized to thank Ted Conklin for all he has done for the Sag Harbor community since purchasing The American Hotel 53 years ago. “He’s done more for people in Sag Harbor than anybody knows about,” said Peters, who added that he expected a big crowd for the event.

Ted Conklin, the owner of the American Hotel, who has been battling health issues at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, will be celebrated Monday, December 15, when community members gather on the porch of the hotel to serenade him with their rendition
