Took my wife’s car to a shop and want to make sure I’m not crazy
I took my wife’s 2019 Toyota C-HR to a repair shop after the check engine light came on and the car had reduced engine power. The diagnostic invoice shows a scan/troubleshooting charge of $125.00, with codes listed for the rocker arm actuator/VVL system.
The printed quote shows:
Diagnostic scan & troubleshooting: $125.00
Rocker Arm Actuator Module / VVL part: $345.00
Subtotal: $470.00
Sales tax: $28.46
Total due: $498.46
But here’s where it gets weird: the shop originally quoted me around $3,400 for the repair. When I came back to pick up the car and asked for an itemized quote, he said he was having trouble printing it and then said he would just write down the quoted price — which somehow jumped to almost $3,900.
When I asked what parts were needed for the repair, he couldn’t really explain it and told me I’d have to ask Toyota for the part types and pricing.
Am I crazy for thinking something feels fishy here? The printed invoice shows one thing, but the verbal quote was thousands more.
