Meet our August Cover Family! Raymond and Sadina’s love story had modern beginnings: social media. “Ray messaged me via Facebook,” Sadina explains, “and the rest is history.” The last eight years have brought plenty of laughs and inside jokes, and the home renovations the couple has recently taken on will surely lead to even more laughs. Saginaw Township has always been home to Raymond and Sadina. Both were born and raised here; coincidentally, Raymond’s grandma and Sadina’s great-grandma were good friends for many years, a fact that the couple didn’t know when they first connected!

Congratulations to Tyler, Heritage H.S. class of 2023. Tyler is the son of Josh and Christy Ode of Saginaw Township. He graduated with a 3.85 GPA. Tyler played Varsity Basketball from 9th to 12th grade and held many titles, but he is most proud of being the second player in Heritage history to score 1000 career points. Outside of academics and sports, Tyler enjoys volunteering as a youth basketball camp counselor and basketball trainer for 2nd to None. Tyler will participate in the 2023 EYBL Peach Jam (Augusta, Ga), the most prestigious high school basketball tournament in the country, and will attend the University of Toledo on a full-ride basketball scholarship.

Congratulations to Valley Lutheran's Student of the Month, Taegan Johnson, a Freshman, and a Bay City resident. She is the granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Brian and Lisa Johnson. Taegan has enjoyed coming to Valley this year, as she appreciates the small classes and the friendly atmosphere. She helped with tech and sound for the spring production and is active in Chess Club. In addition to her school involvement, Taegan (along with her grandmother) manages a non-profit, Taegan’s Treasures (www.taeganstreasures.com), that she started when she was 9. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she was struck by children not having basic things that they enjoyed. Taegan loves books, so she put her efforts into raising money to purchase books for those in need locally. In the last 5 years, she has donated thousands of books around the Tri-Cities region. She provides new books to hospitals and ambulances and gently used books to area shelters. We commend Taegan for her generous heart and proactive attitude!

Congratulations to Marco Olascuaga, Nouvel's class of 2024, for being selected as student of the month for July. Marco is the son of Eduardo and Davina Olascuaga. Their home Parish is St. Francis of Assisi. He was nominated by Mrs. Veitengruber, who shared, “Marco is an outstanding student who works very hard to improve his work. He is a role model amongst his peers. I appreciate how polite and positive his presence is.” Marco participates in multicultural club, honor guard, NHS and is a captain on the soccer team. He is involved in altar serving at his parish and enjoys volunteering. His favorite class is math.

Mom Shawna shared with us, “It made sense to become a resident of Saginaw Township.” Many Township residents likely echo Shawna’s statement about her move to the Lathrup Park neighborhood four years ago. This publication is all about your neighborhood: the folks who live in the quiet homes that dot the Tittabawassee River, the many locally owned businesses along State Street and Bay Road plus the various activities available at Imerman Park, and the youngsters playing at one of the Nation’s finest recreational soccer facilities. Consider us your snapshot for all things Saginaw Township.
