Meet the mesmerizing Rhinoceros Viper (Bitis nasicornis). Instantly recognizable by its vivid geometric patterns—ranging from brilliant blues and greens to yellows—and its signature horn-like scales on the snout, this large viper can reach up to 1.5m, with females often larger than males.

With a broad, triangular head and robust, thick body, its stunning coloration doubles as camouflage, helping it blend effortlessly into dense leaf litter or the dappled shadows of Ugandan forests and wetlands. Despite being one of Africa’s most venomous snakes, the Rhinoceros Viper is surprisingly calm and prefers to avoid confrontation, warning intruders with a fierce hiss rather than striking.

The Rhinoceros Viper is a master of patience and stealth—a true ambush predator! Nocturnal and mainly terrestrial, it waits motionless for hours, relying on its camouflage to surprise prey along forest trails. Its diet mostly consists of rodents and small mammals, but it also eats frogs, birds, and fish, especially in wetter habitats.

So, this picture apparently has Abilene/Big Country folks baffled and I’m not sure why...? People are claiming it’s a new hybrid species, people are claiming they’re hyper aggressive, people are claiming they’re not from around here, people are claiming aliens dropped them off to wreak havoc on the Big Country, people are saying all sorts of crazy things about this/these very common snake(s)....
Here’s the truth;
These snakes are called massasauga’s (Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus). You snake people don’t argue with me on the “tergeminus” part because I’m not budging... Yes, they are a rattlesnake. Yes, medical attention is very necessary if you experience a bite.
With that said; they’re dirt common around here in the right spots. I’ve literally found hundreds around Abilene and surrounding areas. The reason people don’t see them as often is simply because their habitat requirements and their behaviors can be quite different than western diamondbacks, and this makes for fewer human/snake encounters, especially in human inhabited areas. It’s NOT a hybrid, they’re not “aggressive,” aliens didn’t drop them off and they’re definitely part of the local ecosystems.

This Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was found hopelessly stuck in a rodent snap trap (much better than poison! but that's another topic). These can be dangerous situations. It was freed, carefully, but was limp and lifeless, seemingly dead. However, previous experience indicated that the snake may just have been unconscious, with pressure from the trap on its lung and heart. It was taken to our building to monitor, and a couple of hours later it was up and about without any major injuries. The next day, it was taken back and released within its natural home range
