Slight change of plans. I realized that I'm too autistic to peace out on a day that isn't Monday or Friday, and today is Tuesday. Since I rarely post on weekends, anyway: Friday is a natural break and makes more sense. Therefore, the shenanigans will continue for another couple of days.

Attention creepy kids, degenerates, and assorted weirdos:

The Night Queen is taking an extended hiatus, which will likely begin tomorrow and run through the first two weeks of September.

I did the same thing last fall, and I both enjoyed and needed the time away.

I’m not burnt out or depressed or frustrated or anything like that, by the way. I just…feel like taking a break, something all creators should do at some point.

During that time, I’ll be creating less, and writing more. We know those are not necessarily the same thing.

I’ll also be catching up on reading, finishing up a few passion projects, and focusing on freelancing. Being self-published is quite rewarding, but I want to continue to build my portfolio as a contributor to reputable national publications like Rewire.

Additionally, I’ll be doing some much-needed streamlining to my social media posting strategy, as well as getting my website ready for the eventual re-launch.

Stepping away doesn’t have to be a negative. In this case, it’s very much a positive.

And when I get back, I’ll be bringing every bit of the irreverent (yet oddly coherent) chaos that y’all have come to expect from me.

Despite his association with the Devil’s Tree, the only violent acts that Gerard John Schaefer is proven to have committed in the area actually occurred on Hutchinson Island, which is about 15 miles from Oak Hammock Park. This earned him the nickname The Butcher of Blind Creek.

Due to his propensity for binding and suspending his victims from trees with a hangman’s noose, media outlets also called him The Hangman. However, Schaefer is perhaps best known as the Killer Cop, due to being a Martin County Sheriff’s deputy at the time.

While on duty in July of 1972, Schaefer encountered hitchhikers Nancy Ellen Trotter (18) and Paula Sue Wells (17) and offered to drive them to Jensen Beach the following day.

After meeting the two girls at the agreed-upon location, Schaefer deviated from the route and began lecturing them on the dangers of taking rides with strange men.

Once they reached Hutchinson Island, he bound Trotter and Wells to large cypress trees with ropes around their legs and nooses around their necks, before informing them that they would be r***d and murdered.

Schaefer deliberately tied the ropes so that the girls would be forced to balance themselves on the exposed cypress roots to alleviate the pressure around their necks.

Tolomato Cemetery

Tolomato Cemetery is named after the Tolomato Indians who initially inhabited the land on which it was built. First used for burials around 1777, it contains the graves of Native Americans, Spanish colonists, the enslaved, British settlers, and the victims of St. Augustine’s numerous yellow fever epidemics.

Considered to be the most haunted cemetery in St. Augustine, many visitors say their spirits still roam the grounds.

Other ghosts include a lady in white and five-year-old James Morgan, who is buried under the oak tree from which he fell to his death in 1877.

James seems to favor other children, and they tend to be the ones to see him still playing hide and seek among the tombstones and climbing the cemetery’s massive trees. The last photo is of his tiny headstone.

The Old Jail

The Old Jail is considered to be the most haunted location in St. Augustine.

In operation from 1891 to 1953, its construction was financed by Henry Flagler and used the same company that built Alcatraz.

It was deliberately designed to look like a Romanesque Revival hotel so that tourists wouldn't be turned off. For a total of 26 years, the jail was under the iron fist of the sadistic Joe Perry, St. Johns County's longest-serving sheriff.

The condemned could see the gallows being constructed from their cells and a total of 8 men were hanged there.

Potter's Wax Museum & The Old Drugstore

The building was constructed in 1887 as Speissegger's Drug Store, a Victorian apothecary shop and general store that remained in business for decades.

According to legend, the Speissegger brothers performed embalmings on the premises when no undertaker was available. The traveling mortician's table in my Cromwell's Parlour of Paranormal Curiosities post allegedly belonged to them.

In 1948, George Leonard Potter opened his wax museum in the building, having been inspired by Madame Tussaud.

My apologies for not getting more pictures of the wax figures, but that's not really what we were there for.

We were there to hear about the failed garroting of pirate Andrew Ranson in 1684.

Stories of paramornal activity at the location have been around just as long as the building and they persist to this day.
