St Augustine and St Johns County recently lost a great citizen, Kerry McCarthy. Kerry was frequently a host on various local radio stations including WSOS. She was super talented on-air. When not on-air, Kerry was consulting local candidates on their campaigns and helping local non profit organizations. She loved her Family and always talked about them. She loved St Augustine and her people. Farewell Kerry and thank you for your years of contributions to our Community. https://www.craigfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Kathleen-Kerry-Mccarthy?obId=46884017

Happy birthday Henry!

Happy birthday Henry!

🎉 Today is Henry Flagler's 🎈 birthday, the man whose vision helped define St. Augustine as the destination we know today.

Flagler transformed Florida’s Historic Coast in the late 1800s with his grand hotels, innovative infrastructure and bold investments. His masterpiece, the Ponce de Leon Hotel (now Flagler College), set a new standard for luxury and helped establish St. Augustine as a world-class destination. He also developed the Alcazar Hotel (now the Lightner Museum) and the Cordova (Casa Monica Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection), bringing elegance, architecture and cultural vibrancy to the area. And beyond tourism, Flagler expanded the Florida East Coast Railway, opening new opportunities for commerce, travel and growth.

But his influence didn’t stop there. Flagler helped modernize the city with improvements to transportation, utilities and urban planning. From public works projects to philanthropic contributions, many aspects of the city’s development were shaped by his ambition and resources. His vision touched architecture, culture, infrastructure, education and the overall identity of St. Augustine.

In his later years, Flagler continued his railroad expansion down Florida’s coastline, ultimately reaching Key West, one of the most ambitious engineering feats of its time. He passed away in 1913 at the age of 83 and is buried in St. Augustine’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, a place he built in honor of his daughter Jennie.

Today, his legacy lives on in the landmarks, history and innovation that still define St. Augustine.

Which of his hotels would you have stayed in?
