Hey neighbors! As the leaves fall and the temperatures drop, it's the perfect time for a friendly reminder to prep your home and prevent those costly winter disasters. A little prep now goes a long way!
Hereโs your late fall/early winter home safety checklist:

Disconnect Your Hose! Seriously, do it now! Disconnect all hoses from your outside spigots/faucets and drain them. This prevents water from freezing in the pipe and cracking your faucet or bursting a pipe inside your wall.
Shut off the interior valve to the exterior spigot if you have one, and leave the outside faucet open to drain any remaining water.

Clean Out Your Gutters! Remove all those fallen leaves and debris. Clogged gutters can lead to improper drainage, ice dams, and water damage to your roof and foundation. Add gutter extensions to being water at least 4-6 feet away from the home and foundation
Clean Your Dryer Vents! Lint buildup is a major fire hazard. Give your dryer vent system a thorough cleaning (not just the lint screen!) to ensure proper airflow and safety. Dont forget to clean the exterior lint catcher

Change Smoke & CO Detector Batteries! The start of the heating season is the perfect time to check that all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Replace those batteries!
Service Your Furnace! Have a professional check and service your heating system to ensure it's running efficiently and safely.
Freshen Your Furnace Filter! Change or clean your furnace filter for better air quality and system efficiency.
Reverse Ceiling Fans: Set your fans to run clockwise on a low speed to push warm air (which rises!) back down into the room.

Check for Drafts: Inspect around windows and doors for air leaks and seal them with weatherstripping or caulk to save on heating bills.
Inspect Your Roof: Use binoculars (safely!) to look for loose, missing, or damaged shingles before snow and ice hit.
Know Your Water Shut-Off: Make sure everyone in the house knows where the main water shut-off valve is located in case of a burst pipe emergency.
Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the cozy season!
