Monarch check in 🦋 how many have you seen this year? More or less than usual?

I have seen more monarchs on the farm this year than ever before. I’d like to think it’s because of all the milkweed we’ve been letting run wild.

They really like zinnias, though they are not a native flower. Every time I go to the garden, I see at least one, usually more, and sometimes I see them mating - a great sign that they are finding what they need to thrive on the farm!

What do you do with an abundance of bell peppers?! 🫑

It’s that easy! The mulch smothers the sod, builds soil, and holds moisture.

I am constantly building large perennial beds on the farm and this works best for those areas because I can do it quickly with my tractor, and I can get a massive amount of chips for free.

I have a totally different approach for vegetable beds!

Don’t ya love when you finally get a project done that you’ve been meaning to do forever? 😅

I got the east side of the farm store mulched. That means I can finally get all the plants that have been living on my porch for the last 3 months in the ground!

Actually, fall is a good time of year to plant perennials. As long as they have about 6 weeks before the first frost to get established, they’ll have a head start for next year.

I’m putting in hydrangeas, yarrow, asters, and a lot of native plugs like rattlesnake master, milkweed, prairie dropseed and more!

I’d love suggestions for other perennials you like - bonus if they are edible! 🌱

Another huge batch of dill pickles done!

I’m harvesting 50 pounds of cucumbers every 3 days right now. For the crunchiest pickles, you have to can them very soon after picking. It’s hard keeping up!

These will be available in our farm store along with our other farm grown canned goods: salsas, relishes, pickled veggies, jams, jellies, and more!
