Instead of giving every crop its own bed, try pairing fast-growing crops with slow-growing ones. In this example, lettuce matures in about 60 days while onions take closer to 100 days. By the time the onions need room to bulb up, the lettuce has already been harvested.

Same space. Two harvests.

This is called interplanting, and it’s one of the easiest ways to grow more food without building more garden beds.

Help! Picking a paint color is SO HARD! 🎨

We got samples of what we thought were beautiful colors, but on the interior walls of the farm store they were way too dark.

So, off we go to the paint store to try again 🤪 we gotta hurry… we’re painting this week!

What colors should we try?

P.S. the tan on the exterior is just primer.

That seed packet is lying to you.

Wide spacing recommendations are often based on commercial farming systems that need room for machines to plant, cultivate, and harvest. But most home gardeners aren’t growing that way.

Even in my large market garden, I interplant almost everything like this.

Walk through a forest and you’ll notice there’s almost never bare soil. Nature fills every gap quickly. The soil stays shaded, moist, and packed with organic matter and nutrients.

That’s the goal.

By filling space intentionally in the garden, we can suppress weeds, hold moisture longer, build healthier soil, and grow more food in less space!
