Somali referee Omar Artan one of Africa’s most respected football officials, has reportedly been denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa. The decision has sparked concern across the football community, as Artan was selected by FIFA World Cup to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup becoming the first Somali referee in history to reach football’s biggest stage.

Artan has served as a FIFA referee since 2018 and has officiated in major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). In 2025, he was recognized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as Africa’s Men’s Referee of the Year.

Many have questioned how a referee officially appointed by FIFA and traveling for World Cup duties could be denied entry despite possessing the required travel documents. Critics argue that such decisions undermine the principles of fairness, merit, and international cooperation that global sports are meant to represent.
