Rocky tells the rags to riches story of Rocky Balboa, an uneducated, kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer, working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia. Rocky, a small-time club fighter, gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. Rocky also stars Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Adrian's brother Paulie, Burgess Meredith as Rocky’s trainer Mickey Goldmill, and Carl Weathers as the reigning champion, Apollo Creed. Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky in three and a half days, shortly after watching the championship match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Made on a budget of just over $1 million, Rocky earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1976. 39th ANNIVERSARY ~ On this day in 1986, RIP officially released its first issue! As many of you know, the magazine was originally conceptualized by Althea Flynt, who tragically passed away 7 months after it went to press. One of her last official duties at LFP was to encourage a burgeoning young editor named LONN FRIEND to take over as executive editor at RIP. Her instincts were correct, and RIP went on to be one of the most formidable music publications of the 80s and 90s.
