City identifies failing street

The St. James Street Department identified Gardenia Court as a failing street that will need repairs to fix alligator cracks. Workers tested the street last week and discovered the road base was not thick enough, leading to its deterioration.

Public Works Director Lyle Thomas explained that a similar situation had to be addressed on the next road over as the base was not thick enough to support the traffic. The city had to dig up the street, reinforce the base, and pour new asphalt to solve the problem.

“I am really excited to put this before the school board. For those of you who have been around for multiple years, have stated, from our last project, there is a timetable in the 2027-28 timeframe where things would get tight for the district as some interest came due on some bonds that came out,” Webster told the board.
