On a recent visit to Danville National Cemetery, I came upon the grave of First Lt. Morton A. Read a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Lt. Read served in Company H of the 8th New York Calvary. His unit was at Appomattox Station, VA on April 8, 1865 and in a battle with amongst others was the 1st Texas Infantry. This battle was among the very last of the Civil War as the next day General Robert E. Lee surrendered at the Appomattox court house. For his gallantry during the battle Lt Read was awarded the Medal of Honor.
