16 July 1962: The Beach Boys inked a seven-year contract with Capitol Records. “Surfin’ Safari” was the group’s first major release for Capitol, peaking at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. 10 June 1978: John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John topped the Billboard Hot 100 with “You’re the One that I Want.” The hit single was featured on the soundtrack of the blockbuster film, Grease. 03 June 1967: Aretha Franklin landed No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her rendition of Otis Redding’s “Respect.” She would go on to earn two Grammy Awards for this performance. Franklin’s rendition was even preserved in the National Recording Registry and listed as one of the “Songs of the Century” by the RIAA and National Endowment for the Arts.
