We regularly stock our Kindness Closet with food items, personal care items and more, all free to anyone in need. Everyone could use a little help sometimes and the Kindness Club is here for you. 🩵

🥳 We are super excited to announce that we have partnered with our friends at The Village Pedder to provide pre-paid meals to anyone in need!!

If you are in need of a meal, just call 814-834-1095 during business hours (Monday - Friday 11am to 3pm) and order the daily special for pick up - (delivery is not available).

All you need to say is:

“Please put it on Julia’s tab” — and your meal is taken care of, no questions asked.

Our annual Household Hazardous Waste collection is five weeks away. It is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. until noon here at the recycling center. You might think that five weeks is a long time, but summer is typically a pretty busy time for folks and the start to the school year is just around the corner. It's not too early to take a first look under the sink, in the garage, and in the basement for hazardous household items that you want to remove from your home. Although we are able to take paint and pesticides all year long, this collection is for the items we are not permitted to accept. Things like gasoline, gasoline mixes and other automotive fluids, antifreeze, chemicals, adhesives, household cleaning agents, etc. We try to get the word out early, and typically we set the date in January or February. If you can't make the collection and you know someone who is going to drop off items on Aug. 23, please ask if they will bring yours too. We are not allowed to accept household hazardous waste here during the year. This is your one opportunity to properly manage and recycle these types of items. If you have any questions, please give us a shout!

We’re one week out from what could be the BEST WEEKEND of someone’s life!

We’re talking about the elk tag reveal, and for 140 people, it’s going to be a REALLY good weekend.

Join us in PA’s elk country at the 25th annual Elk Expo that runs Saturday, July 26 to Sunday, July 27 at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette.

The 2025-26 PA elk license reveal will take place on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m.

Can’t make it to the expo? Tune in live for the reveal on the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s YouTube channel.

Missed the deadline to apply for the elk license lottery? You've still got a chance at an elk tag!

Six pack rings are a hard nope here at the center, and we get them all the time, especially in film plastic. To learn about what can and cannot be recycled in the realm of plastics, please join me Monday, July 21, at 6 p.m. here at the recycling center for a workshop on plastic recycling. We will talk about common mistakes in recycling plastics, why we accept the plastics that we do, and the things you can do to help understand plastics better. If the July date doesn't work, I will be in Johnsonburg on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the borough building, also at 6 p.m.

💜🥎 What a Journey. What a Team. 🥎💜

The St. Marys Major All Stars wrapped up their incredible run last night after a hard-fought battle in the State Championship. West Suburban Little came out strong in Game 1, forcing the "if necessary" game—one that didn’t even begin until 9:45pm. In the end, West Suburban Little League - WSLL took the win of the 2nd game and will move on to represent Pennsylvania in the Eastern Region tournament being held in Bristol, CT. We wish them all the best and will be cheering loud for Team PA!

While the final outcome wasn't in our favor, these girls showed heart, hustle, and resilience every step of the way. From opening pitch to final out, they represented St. Marys with pride, grit, and grace.

To our amazing community—thank you. 💜 Your unwavering support, cheers, donations, and love carried these girls through every inning. Whether you traveled to cheer them on or sent good vibes from home, you were part of this journey.

And to ALL our All Star girls —CONGRATULATIONS on a phenomenal season. You played your hearts out, and we couldn’t be more proud!

The Community Recycling Center was mentioned in a post recently about electronics recycling, in particular because an individual wanted to know where he could recycle old electronics. We have had a program in place to recycle electronic discards since June 2004. We are one about a half dozen sites in Pennsylvania that take all electronics (there are a few exceptions, such as sweepers and coffee makers) free of charge to households. If you have a TV or computer or printer or radio, stereo, phone, boom box, microwave, etc., we can recycle it through our program. We do ask that folks who live outside of Elk County put a few bucks in the donation box to help with providing the service. If you have a business, we ask that you set up an account with our contractor, eLoop LLC. They are a great PA-based company that has been working with us since 2013, and currently over 60 businesses and other agencies use them to securely recycle electronics. You can reach out to us for their contact information. The state's electronics recycling law mandates that electronics be recycled and not landfilled. We've been helping residents and businesses do just that for many, many years.
