myTalk 107.1 held a fundraiser to honor the lives of Melissa and Mark Hortman. Here’s more about the Food For Kids fundraiser:

We are making our way through this somber week after the sad and scary weekend events that led to the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette and the killing of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. At a time when Minnesotans are feeling such an immense loss, we look for a place to put our grief. Their children suggest we do something good in the community to honor them. In their own words:

“Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. Our parents lived their lives with immense dedication to their fellow humans. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents’ memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else.”

Rep. Melissa Hortman helped pass the Free School Lunch initiative for public schools in Minnesota. In the spirit of making sure no children go hungry in our communities, myTalk is partnering with Every Meal – an organization that fights child hunger by focusing on filling the food gaps children face – for the Food for Kids Fundraiser as a small act to help heal our heart and do good in a community that Melissa and Mark Hortman cared so much about.

We are myTalkers. We are Minnesotans. We are in this together.

As of Friday morning, the Food For Kids fundraiser to benefit Every Meal has raised $27,435.

On Saturday, June 7, The Morning Mix, in partnership with Huggies, hosted a community diaper drive in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in St. Charles. The event aimed to raise awareness of a critical local issue: 1 in 2 Chicago-area families with young children struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy*.

As part of a month-long campaign, Morning Mix hosts Chris Petlak, Nikki Chuminatto, and Whip invited listeners to stop by and donate diapers to benefit families in need. With Huggies generously matching every donation received, the community answered the call in a big way — resulting in a donation of 150,000 diapers to support Share Our Spare, a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to providing essential items to children age 0–5.

“This diaper drive has been incredibly meaningful to our mission to ensure our youngest neighbors’ basic needs are met,” said Alex Goodfellow, Executive Director of Share Our Spare. “We’ve been able to raise awareness about the dire need for diapers in our city, and with the help of hundreds of generous Chicagoans, more than 1,500 children will have the diapers they need to stay clean, healthy, and dry next month.”

“Local radio has the unique ability to rally people around a cause that truly matters,” said Chris Eagan, Vice
President of Brand and Content for The Mix and Throwback 100.3. “We’re incredibly proud of our Morning Mix
team, our partners at Huggies, and — most of all — our listeners who showed up in a big way to support
Chicago families. This is what community impact looks like.”

2060 Cares had a blast at the Minnesota Zoo yesterday, teaming up to tackle invasive Buckthorn! 🌿 Armed with tools and plenty of team spirit, they spent a couple of hours pulling out the pesky plant and maybe getting a little competitive along the way. There was plenty of laughter, a bit of friendly rivalry over who could build the biggest brush pile, and a whole lot of teamwork. It was a great way to give back to the environment while bonding as a team.
