When we were in Key West, we grabbed lunch at Sloppy Joe’s Bar - and it did not disappoint.

Home to the original Sloppy Joe sandwich, a messy, flavor-packed classic dating back to the 1930s and still served up by the hundreds every day. It is also where Ernest Hemingway himself once hung out.

If you’re visiting Key West, we recommend making it a point to stop by—this is a true taste of history.

From one extreme to the other…

We’ve officially stood at both ends of the map—visiting the northernmost point in the contiguous United States at Northwest Angle, and the southernmost point at the iconic Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West.

From the peaceful, remote beauty of northern Minnesota—where the only way in is through Canada—to the vibrant, sun-soaked vibe of Key West, Florida. Same country. Completely different worlds.

Ever notice those colored “plates” attached to the thick ropes when a cruise ship is docked?

Those are called rat guards—and they serve a surprisingly important purpose.

When a ship is in port, its mooring lines (those heavy ropes) create a perfect bridge between land and ship. Unfortunately, that’s an open invitation for unwanted stowaways like rats and other rodents. Ports all over the world deal with rodents, and without prevention, they could easily climb aboard.

That’s where rat guards come in.

These disc-shaped barriers are placed on the ropes to stop rodents in their tracks. Their wide, smooth surface makes it nearly impossible for rats to climb over or around them—protecting the ship from pests getting onboard.

Next time you’re walking the pier before embarkation, take a look —you’ll spot these little guardians quietly doing their job.

Day 4 on the ms Zuiderdam: Turks and Caico.
As you maybe can tell this has been a relaxing cruise for us, including this day! We spent the day enjoying the beautiful waters in Grand Turk. The beach was filled with white sand and the blue water was spectacular. The port has a small display of John Glenn’s space flight which was fun to explore. Lunch was crack conch and the local drink on the beach. Very unwinding kind of day!
