Korean Quarterly

Korean Quarterly Korean Quarterly is a progressive, non-profit online newspaper for the adopted Korean and Korean American community. We seek out unheard voices and new perspectives.

Korean Quarterly is a non-profit/volunteer publication that provides independent and alternative reporting on issues of identity, racism, politics and the arts and is a forum for the ideas and creativity of the whole Korean American community.

Our coverage focuses on the place where identity, creativity and culture intersect. From the Twin Cities to Chicago, LA, NYC, Europe, Pyongyang, Seoul a

nd Tokyo, we have been there to cover to a variety of viewpoints and issues – from former comfort women, reunification and reconciliation efforts and war crimes tribunals to recording stories from our elders and documenting 1.5, 2nd generation and adopted Korean perspectives and issues. Korean Quarterly’s readers are members of the Korean American community, including adopted Koreans, 1.5 and second generation, bi-racial and intercultural/interracial Korean American families. It also attracts many non-Korean readers, including parents and relatives of adopted Koreans, other Asian Americans, and people who have an interest in Korean culture and history, the Korean American community or racial and ethnic identity issues of minority populations in America.

Korean Quarterly includes coverage of the arts, politics, Korean culture, business, and national and international news. We publish feature material, such as personality profiles, business features, personal essays, creative writing and poetry. We also do critical analysis, including book, film and music reviews, and editorials.

KQ has also received over 25 awards of excellence over the years, including: MN Newspaper Association, a nomination for a national award for Ethnic Issues coverage from the Independent Press Association, Community Service Awards from the President of Korea and Korean Association of MN, Global Korean Award, and New American Media Ethnic Media Award.

Early giving has now started
for Give to the Max Day ~ November 20

GTMD is an annual day of philanthropy,
and is a great time to give an end-of-year gift to Korean Quarterly!

Building a historical record of the Korean American community:
Funding for KQ's future ~ and for preserving our past through a digital archive
Help Korean Quarterly raise the remaining $4,000 needed to complete the Digital Archive, featuring all 98 quarterly issues
(published from 1997 to 2022)
Thank you for considering Korean Quarterly for your annual Give to the Max Day donation.

The roots of KQ
Korean Quarterly is a non-profit media organization, based in Minnesota, created by a diverse group of Korean Americans and allies who cofounded this unique newspaper in 1997.

Korean Quarterly is made by a village of volunteer contributors, from seasoned Korea-watchers, photographers, and artists, to beginning writers who believe they have something to say.

Building a historical record of the Korean American community
Over the last three years, KQ has funded and launched the Korean Quarterly Archive to preserve each of the 98 quarterly issues, dating back to 1997. This work is ongoing, but the archive is live now, from the last print edition published in 2022, back to 1999. (updating the archive is slow, librarian-like work!)

To use it, just go to the archive link on the website and look up a favorite Korean American author, celebrity, locally famous Korean Minnesotan, or even a Korean American event or Korean recipe.

Continuing excellent quality independent journalism in uncertain times ~ Korean Quarterly continues to produce news, feature stories, opinion writing (and some fun stuff) on our online edition (www.koreanquarterly.org).

At a time when independent local journalism is fast disappearing, KQ has continued its mission, thanks to its many determined volunteers. Please continue to support this ongoing voice of the Korean American community.

Help put KQ’s 25-year history online
There are many hundreds of pages in the archive now, with only two year’s worth of issues left to go. With your help, we can complete this giant project!

Support this community journalism project on Give to the Max Day. You can also give an end-of-year tax-deductible gift at any time on our website. Thank you, KQ family!

Please help spread the word by forwarding this message and fundraising link on your social media accounts to help KQ achieve its fundraising goal, and to share the work this non-profit/volunteer organization is doing.

Please support Korean Quarterly's funding appeal to support our new online edition and digital archive project. You can also support us by subscribing to our print edition or order cool merch through our website.
