I’m excited to be heading south this week to visit one of my most favorite museums and I will step into the stories that shaped the Everglades.
“Folklore, Fish Tales, Family Stories – Legends of the Everglades”, the newest student exhibit at Museum of the Everglades. Every year, we team up with Everglades City School - our local K-12 school and one of the last of its kind in Florida - to explore a different facet of our community’s unique character.
This year’s theme? The tall tales, ghost stories, and local legends passed down through generations. From phantom sightings in historic buildings to far-fetched (but maybe true) family yarns, students have submitted art, photos, writing, and video to bring the Everglades’ rich storytelling tradition to life. Every submission helps preserve and share a part of the unique regional lore that makes our area one-of-a-kind.
The exhibit features a blend of student creativity and historic accounts—including haunted lore from the Old Laundry (our very own museum building), eerie happenings at the school gym, and ghostly figures said to linger at the Rod & Gun Club and Smallwood Store.
The “Legends of the Everglades” exhibit is on display now through September 6. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the stories that echo through these swamps.
Museum of the Everglades is located at 105 Broadway West in Everglades City. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 9AM to 4PM. Admission is always free!
