Clear communication with your producer is essential to getting a recording you love. Before heading into the studio, record a rough demo—even a simple voice memo—to give your producer an idea of the key, tempo, and potential arrangements. If they’re involved in songwriting, this will help them suggest some fresh ideas that may elevate your song. Sending references of artists, songs, and mixes that match your vision will also guide production choices, from instrument recording to mix direction. Providing this in advance ensures you’re both prepared and can make the most of your studio time.

One of the more abstract musical projects that I’ve worked on was a collaborative cover of Knife Prty by Deftones with Deigaard Music and Tom Kersey. 🎻 Tom did an excellent job recreating the eerie screeching vocals in the bridge with cello. When it came time to creating the cover art, I didn’t want something too “on the nose” that featured a knife so Alyssa Armstrong helped me combine the softness of dried flowers and fake blood to symbolize a re-opened wound.

I always love having Tom Kersey come in to record his cello magic. He’s added some eerie lines to a cover of “Knife Prty” by Chasing Jonah some soothing low end to Hannah Stokes “1957” as well as some guiding accents to “Horizon”, a soon to be released track by Chasing Jonah written for Sol Searcher!
