The Sharp County Regional Airport Authority (SCRAA) met Wednesday, July 2 at the airport terminal building at 3 p.m. Board Chairman Adam Bates called the meeting to order with just four other board meetings present, five members total, just short of a quorum. Nevertheless, Chairman Bates carried on with procedures as Bookkeeper Peggy Long and General Manager (GM) John Manning were present and no major deciding votes were to be taken.

In the financial report, Long reported for the month of June. Income included $2,958.41 in fuel sales, $2,500 in hangar rent and $1,750 in rental property revenue. They lost the tenant on the housing rental property which King-Rhodes Realty is handling. Total income for the month was $7,287.65.

For the past 14 years, Ryan and Sabra Smith have built a farming and ranching operation that has allowed the family of five to farm, Smith Farms, full-time. This hard work was recognized when the Smiths were named the 2025 Izard County Farm Family of the Year.

Between bailing hay, buying and selling cattle and running a booming chicken house, the Smiths plan to expand their operations fully into the community.

“We plan to start a feedlot and sell our beef straight of the farm,” the Smiths said upon submitting for the farm family of the year. “We plan to build a store front for the public to come into and purchase our vegetables, flowers, baked goods and coffee.”

The Henley Farm located in Evening Shade was awarded Sharp County’s Farm Family of the Year 2025. Given their farm operation is fairly young (about 5 years in the making), this is a very impressive honor. More recently, the Henley’s had the honor of winning District Farm Family of the Northern District of Arkansas and will advance to the State’s Farm Family Competition of 2025, proving they MUST be growing in the right direction. By Farm Family standards, that would be an economically sound, environmentally sensitive and community/family-based manner.

Their farm is a beautiful property located in Evening Shade about a mile from the main highway that runs through town. Bryan and Mary Ellen Henley live there with their daughters Audra (11-years old) and Addley (8-years old) along with a few goats, about 170+ head of cattle and some smaller critters running around. It’s a very peaceful stretch of land, about 120 acres the Henley’s bought in 2020 when they were looking for some property to start their farming enterprise.

Whether it’s growing their own feed or growing their family, Jason and Tricia Guffey, of Viola, have worked day and night to get their farm to a place where it can be successful.

This year, the hard work has been acknowledged as the family was named the 2025 Fulton County Farm Family of the Year.

The Guffeys, along with Jason’s mother Brenda Guffey, own 804 acres while leasing another 800. Cattle are their main livestock with 12 head of cow-commercial and 300-600 head of yearlings ranging between 300 to 800 pounds.

“We market our livestock to local sale barns and buyers by establishing a reputation for quality cattle,” the Guffeys said, “which we have built over the years through consistent breeding and care. We strive to maintain strong relationships with all local buyers and sale barns by offering our very best to everyone.”

Hardy’s Music on Main had a great showing during the 4th of July weekend, despite the area’s distractions like playing in the waters of the nearby Spring River and firework displays all over the county. People are always looking for an escape, not having to do anything but sit back, relax and close your eyes to the melodies and rhythms of whoever is playing.

Well, that relaxation opportunity on Main Street Hardy will continue through the summer. On Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m., Garrett Duncan will be reappearing at the Gazebo with his renditions of some of the old rock ‘n roll classics, including the Beatles, Jimmy Buffet and others. He’ll likely show his versatility, venturing into some of his own songs. You may recall some of Garrett’s memorable appearances with his wife Ashton. Garrett will be carrying this one solo, as he has been doing to exemplary esteem.
