In July, as of July 23 (the latest update as of Aug. 1), the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 19 new drilling permits in the Utica Shale. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued 100 unconventional well-drilling permits in July, down slightly from the 128 it issued in July 2015.

Ohio issued only 19 drilling permits in July, signaling continued pull-back in oil and gas industry.

13 new horizontal drilling permits were issued for the Utica or Point Pleasant shale in Ohio last month, but no new permits were issued for Ohio's Marcellus shale.

May was a slow month for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources when it came to the number of Utica shale permits — just 16 were issued. That number is low when you compare it to May 2015, when more than 40 permits were issued for drilling in the Utica shale in Ohio.

Only 16 shale drilling permits were issued in Ohio in May. In Pennsylvania, several Marcellus shale counties received permits. In West Virginia, Tyler County received 11 drilling permits.

Currently, the daily output averages 32.77 million barrels.
