Soundings East

Soundings East Soundings East is the literary journal of Salem State University, published annually with support from the Center for Creative and Performing Arts.

Submissions for Volume 45 will be read between September 1, 2022 and February 1, 2023. We will respond within two months. Prose submissions (fiction and non-fiction) should not exceed 10,000 words. Poetry of any style is welcomed; please limit prose submission to two pieces and poetry to five poems. Include a brief bio. All publication rights revert to authors. Electronic submissions are accepted

2024 Claire Keyes Poetry Award🖋📖

Laura Read of Spokane, WA won the 2024 Claire Keyes Poetry Award. She received $1,000, and her poems will be published in Volume 46 of Soundings East. Maria Mazziotti Gillan judged. The annual award is given for a group of poems. The next deadline is
February 1, 2025.

Laura Read is the author But She Is Also Jane (University of Massachusetts Press, 2023, winner of the Juniper Prize); Dresses from the Old Country (BOA Editions, 2018); Instructions for my Mother‘s Funeral (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2012, winner of the AWP Donald Hall Prize for Poetry, selected by Dorianne Laux), and The Chewbacca on Hollywood Boulevard Reminds Me of You (winner of the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award, 2011). Recipient of a Washington State Artists Trust Grant, a Florida Review Prize for Poetry, and the Crab Creek Review Prize for Poetry, Laura teaches at Spokane Falls Community College and in the MFA program at Eastern Washington University.

Soundings East, the international print literary magazine published through Salem State University, is looking for art submissions. We are seeking high-resolution photographs of work (oil painting, monoprint, sculptures, etc.) for our Spring 2024 issue. Please email all submissions, along with a 50-word bio and relevant artist websites/links, to [email protected] by February 5th, 2024.

Soundings East cannot financially compensate writers/artists for their work. If work is accepted for publication, artists receive two contributor copies of the magazine. All work is credited to artist, and artists may elect to have artist websites/links included in their 50-word bio at the back of the issue.
