Cory “Salty” Riggs has entered the race for the Salida City Council Ward 3 seat. Riggs currently serves on the Planning Commission and is a former board member of the Chaffee Housing Authority. She has also advocated at the Colorado State Legislature on affordable housing issues.

In her announcement, Riggs said, “Salida voters demand results, not excuses. My record includes wins like the short-term rental tax, the lodging tax reallocation for housing and childcare, and Proposition 123.”

This year’s municipal election will see voters choose one City Council member from each ward and elect a new mayor. Justin Critelli and Tracy Kachadourin have both declared their mayoral candidacies.

Election packets for the 2025 Salida municipal election are available at the Touber Building. To qualify for the ballot, candidates must meet residency and voter registration requirements and collect at least 25 valid signatures.

Governor Jared Polis has issued a disaster emergency declaration for the Oak Fire burning just west of Pagosa Springs, north of Highway 160. The declaration comes after the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office requested state assistance, citing that the fire’s rapid spread had exceeded local firefighting capacity.

As of last night, the Oak Fire had burned 150 acres, with mandatory evacuations in place.

Meanwhile, the Lee Fire—burning in Rio Blanco and Garfield counties—has grown to over 113,000 acres, making it the sixth-largest wildfire in Colorado history. It began on August 2 and has damaged or destroyed several structures, though no fatalities have been reported.
