On their self-titled debut, four-piece outfit House of Artifacts weave together the sounds of 70s progressive rock, Latin music, and psychedelia. Instrumental opener "Strange Artifacts" serves as a danceable overture that introduces musical motifs that appear throughout the album. The darker "Larks of Conquest" spins a tale of a village burning amid ambient guitars and Mellotron flutes, while "Waterfall" offers a calm bossa nova respite. On "Grand Stage Departure," a western inspired instrumental serves as the backdrop for a speaker grappling with an evolving sense of self. The album's lead single, "Fire on the Mountain," opens side B with a frantic first half contrasted with a contemplative ending, reflecting on the pursuit of perfection and the price of ambition. Finally, the album's finale: "The Boy of Bengal." Inspired by the true story of an 18th century boy with two heads, this ambitious composition incorporates both lyrical and musical motifs from throughout the album. Clocking in at ten minutes and five seconds, the sound of "The Boy of Bengal" hints at things to come from House of Artifacts.
