NEWS: Proposed Academic Affairs Cuts Prompt Student Action

Attempting to correct a $10 million state-inflicted budget deficit that was reportedly heavily influenced by the pandemic in 2019 and years following, the administration has instructed Academic Affairs to begin processes of eliminating cost from all the schools and departments – and that their savings will have to account for 60%, or $6 million dollars of the cuts, as it accounts for 60% of the school’s costs.

In an email sent to all unit leaders in Academic Affairs, the provost instructed deans and department chairs to “substantially reduce spending” for Fiscal Year 2026 by cutting out any services that are not essential or high priority. This came with a clarification that optional programs should be considered cut from the budget, “even if it is of some value or was deemed to have value in the past.”

GULL LIFE: Seagulls soar through Fulbright Scholarship opportunities

Salisbury University offers many academic opportunities outside of its eastern shore campus – one of which is a Fulbright.

Students can choose to apply to perform research on a designated topic at a university abroad or can apply for an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA).

Many students are eager to take advantage of these opportunities, which is why Salisbury University has been named among the nation’s top producers of Fulbright Scholars by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and The Chronicle of Higher Education for the past seven years.

According to SU President Carolyn Lepre, receiving a Fulbright award is one of the highest honors in academia. With that being said, the Fulbright process is far from easy.

Salisbury University Senior Caroline Daly was recently announced as a Fulbright Semifinalist for an English Teaching Assistantship to North Macedonia. Daly said she is feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation during this waiting period.

The glow of the neon sign, the pulse of conversations and a packed house marked the opening for Bury Tavern. With a fresh face and new energy, the bar now occupies a familiar address in town.

Bury Tavern celebrated their grand opening on March 21. The venue aims to appeal to a wide range of customers and bring a distinctive atmosphere to the area.

Bury Tavern is a part of Salisbury’s Project Restore initiative, which aims to turn vacant properties into must-see destinations.

GULL LIFE: Who runs the nest? A spotlight on Mike Camillo from SU’s Department of Media Services

Salisbury University offers a variety of equipment to allow students to get hands-on experience within their fields. Students can practice a range of broadcasting skills like reporting, meteorology and even studio production, yet none of this would be possible without the man behind the scenes: Multimedia Technician and Adjunct Faculty Mike Camillo.

OPINION: Defending Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies and initiatives in education, workplaces, and government institutions are facing extreme attacks by the Trump administration.

According to the American Psychological Association, DEI is a “conceptual framework that promotes the fair treatment and full participation of all people, especially populations that have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination because of their background, identity, disability, etc.”

GULL LIFE: Who runs the nest? A spotlight on Mark from Commons Dining

Assistant Director of Commons Dining Mark Andrews has been a chef in the food industry his entire career. He worked as the executive chef for Georgetown University, overseeing both the front and back of the kitchen, until he decided “it was time for a change.”

He originally started working at Salisbury University as the manager at the Commons Dining Hall. The Assistant Director resigned during COVID, which left Andrews to fill the role until he was given the position permanently.
