Brooks campaigns for District 3 county commissioner
Republican Jason Brooks announced his candidacy for Sequoyah County Commissioner District 3 in January. From that time, he has hit the campaign trail running and hasn't stopped. Brooks said he has enjoyed visiting with voters in District 3, getting to know them, and their needs.

Brooks, 51, was raised in the Rocky Point area of Sequoyah County (District 3), where he continues to reside. He is extremely proud of his rural roots and strong family ties. He believes that having lived his entire life in a rural area gives him a lot of insight into the needs of rural residents.

A 2013 graduate of Vian High School, Girty has built a career that reflects her energetic personality and love for working with others. At 31 years old, she serves as a marketing coordinator, a profession she said suits both her creativity and her desire for variety.

“I enjoy fast-paced environments where no two days are the same,” Girty said. “Marketing allows me to be creative, while also helping coordinate projects and build connections with people.”

Keating makes case as gubernatorial candidate
LYNN ADAMS | STAFF WRITER
Depending on whom you talk to, Oklahoma’s most significant Republican governor was either Henry Bellmon (1963-67, 1987-91) or Frank Keating (1995-2003). There’s no question which is gubernatorial candidate Chip Keating’s favorite, but he would undoubtedly appreciate being compared with either should he be elected the state’s 29th governor.

Madi-Belle Stump is 2026 winner
LYNN ADAMS | STAFF WRITER

Sallisaw’s annual Diamond Daze festival has undergone many changes in its 20 years. Among the most popular additions are the Diamond Daze pageants, which underwent a change of its own, shifting from its previous Saturday schedule in the outdoors at Stage Park to a Friday night primetime slot indoors at The Auditorium.

Miss Diamond Daze was crowned Friday as the climax to the festival’s first of two days, a competition that featured 34 contestants in eight age-group pageants for boys and girls, as well as five individual titles, before a standing-room-only crowd of 250.
