Part I: Ben Ficklin Cemetery

By: Cuatro Jones & Matt Cutrer
10/01/25

SAN ANGELO, TX — On the southernmost stretch of Bryant Boulevard, a small blue sign reading "Ben Ficklin Cemetery" quietly marks a hill steeped in West Texas history. Just below it, another sign points to Ben Ficklin Road, names familiar to most locals, yet often unexplained.

Few who pass by have stopped to ask: Who was Ben Ficklin? And what makes this seemingly modest hill so special?

According to local historians, Ben Ficklin was both a man and a place, each playing a significant role in the early development of the region. The original town of Ben Ficklin once served as the county seat of Tom Green County before a catastrophic flood in 1882 swept it away, prompting the rise of San Angelo.

Today, that history is preserved on this hill, thanks in part to the Metcalf-Spence Historical Preservation Foundation. William Caskey, a board director with the foundation, said the site offers visitors a direct connection to San Angelo’s roots.
