First U.S. Screwworm Case Confirmed in S. Texas

From The Texas Tribune: The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday confirmed the country’s first case of New World screwworm — the parasitic fly poised to harm the state’s $15 billion cattle industry — in South Texas.

The USDA tested a sample from La Pryor in Zavala County at the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, IA, confirming the infestation, Secretary Brooke Rollins said during a press conference about the case. The infested animal is a three-week old calf, and there have been no other detections so far.

Data Developer Arrives At Commissioners Court

Somewhat as expected, Tom Green County Commissioners did not move to instate a proposed moratorium on data center and green energy projects in precinct four.

In front of a well attended courtroom, Commissioner Shawn Nanny held a thick stack of papers up, he said was a copy of the lawsuit that was served to Hill County Commissioners after their attempt to pass a similar moratorium earlier this month. The lawsuit's listed damages that well exceeded the budget of Tom Green county, in the hundreds of millions.

This echoed the warnings of Asst. County Attorney Sandy Rothband at last week's meeting, who warned that the county did not have the authority to impose a moratorium, and that the move would invite litigation. Ultimately, no action was taken on the tabled moratorium.
