Updates regarding flying in DHS TRF zones
FIFA TFR update. Vic Moss just got this email from the Commercial Drone Alliance (DSPA is a member):

"As we heard from many of you, the FIFA TFRs put in place broadly around the host cities impacted some of your authorized operations. The CDA worked with FAA and DHS to remedy this. Late last night, I was notified the FAA will start modifying all of the NOTAMs (Texas locations first).

The following language will be added to the current NOTAMS:
“UAS OPS MAY BE PERMITTED W/I DEFINED SSI AIRSPACE WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION AND OPERATED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE OFFICIAL IN CHARGE. FOR DHS AUTHORIZATION EMAIL [email protected].”

For Part 135 or Part 107 operations in that airspace, DHS clarified that you should send a request to [email protected] with the following info:
Which FRZ are you going to operate in
Which cities/areas are those FRZ in
POC that can be reached anytime ops are occurring in case an official needs to reach them

Hope this is helpful to you all! Thanks, and just let us know if you have any questions."

Good news!!!!

Having Fun Flying Kites & Then Watching Them Crash! - A Drone Video.

We had fun flying our kites today, despite the wind becoming erratic about an hour before Sunset. Despite the high wind warnings on the drone's display, we flew the DJI Avata 2 FPV Drone to surf the kites and capture some footage.

Kite Surfing with Avata 2 Drone at the Fun Nite Kite Fly in the SA Medical Center Area on June 6th 2026.

We had fun flying our kites last night, but we had time for a short flight with the DJI Avata 2 FPV Drone to surf the kites and capture some footage.

Flying at night around kites can be very challenging, because you won't see the kite lines until you are too close and the kites can swing wildly in the wind at times. You have to be totally aware of your surroundings and know where the kite lines are running.

Using a Drone to Check Out the Fly It Port A Spring Kite Fly 2026 Day After Event at Port Aransas TX.

The crowd wasn't as heavy on the day after the Spring Kite Fly event, so we put on the goggles, launched our DJI Avata 2 FPV drone, and flew carefully around the beach to capture this footage. We hope you enjoy it.

To learn when the next kite festival events are happening, check out the Coastal Bend Flying Circus, Surfside Flyers Kite Club, San Antonio Area Kite Club, or the Tubes & Tails Kite Club & Kite Team in Kingsville, Texas, groups on Facebook. Music track licensed commercially thru Epidemic Sound.

Did you know about Nite Kites with built-in LED Lights that are battery powered, with remote controls to turn them on & off?

Yellow Rose Drones owns a nice collection of LED kites that can fly day or night, depending upon the wind speed of course. unlike our drone fleet, kites require wind speeds between 8 mph to 20 mph.

We attended the 2026 Spring Kite Fly Festival in Port Aransas Beach (Texas, not South Carolina). The weather in the morning sucked, with damp conditions & not enough wind. But by 4pm, the wind changed directions 180° to blow from off shore and the kites went up into the air quickly.
